I've been saying for several years now that Honda would be very smart to bring back a version of their 250cc sports bike. And they've done it! I'm very excited about this model and I believe Honda will be able to steal a fair portion of market share from Kawasaki (Ninja 250...)! It is fuel injected and it looks great IMO. I'm guessing that the bike has a six speed transmission. A five speed just wouldn't make any sense in a machine like this. My only slight concern is if Honda has made the single cylinder engine underpowered. I don't think they would make that mistake. They know better...right? I'm sure the engine power output will be at least on par with something like that of a WR250R; that is at least where it will need to be to really compete with the little Ninja. I just wish I could afford one
Now I'm just waiting for Honda to come out with a 300-500 CC, fuel injected, six speed dual sport, which I believe could definitely steal some market share from KTM (and I also believe that Honda will actually do this soon - they'd be stupid not to IMO). Anyway check out the new CBR here:

***EDIT: Ok so I just read a bunch of stuff on this bike over at advrider.com. It looks like it is in fact a six speed transmission (no surprise there). I also read (gossip at this point...) that some bike mag tested the bike and it makes 26 horsepower. I'm assuming that this must be at the rear wheel. If that is true, then the CBR 250's engine is only a couple horsepower down from the Ninja's, and makes the torque at much lower RPM. This new Honda reportedly weighs only 359 pounds, 16 pounds lighter than the Kawasaki, if memory serves. Sounds good to me. Well done Honda, well done!

This is pretty interesting. After my crash I am pretty set on ABS for highway trips, and fuel injection I thought was a great thing on my old Vstrom. And double the power of a TW will be very niiiiiice, as Borat would say.



Plus still small, handy, and affordable.

Mini-hooligan street bike from ...Honda? Wow. Hopefully the price is right. If the engine is similar to the NX250 that honda made years ago then this thing will be a blast to zip around on and worthwhile alternative to the 250 ninja. Owned an NX for a short time and it transformed me into a rabid dog everytime. Just not sure enough USA new bike buyers are going to be able to wrap their brains around the idea that a 250 single will satisfy them after the salesmen blows smoke up their bottom and they remember the rebel turd from training class.

Salesmen are truly spawns of Satan. 100 percent of what they say is a lie. And they contribute grossly to this idiotic bigger-is better slogan... salesmen are largely responsible for that rotten attitude that prevails in much of current-day America
Big bikes are great, but small bikes can be enjoyed just as much if not more; if people could pull their heads out of their asses they might be able to actually realize this. Anyway hopefully the economy will serve as a catalyst for a big American reality check. Perhaps it will put in check some of the foolish cocky arrogance (arrogance that can't be backed up in most cases!) that pollutes much of the motorcycling populous. Anyway look now I've gone off and started a rant...sorry, lol.

Long Overdue! With Suzuki bringing in the F.I. TU250X, and now this 250 CBR I'm hoping we see a revival of the 250 class. I bet this lights a fire under Kawasaki's butt to make the ninja 250r F.I. (which it already is in Europe) Curious if Yamaha will bring a 250 offering to the table next year to compete in this segment.

There was the VTR250, AKA Baby'ceptor, which came out as the little brother to the original Interceptor. It was a Vtwin. My buddy has one and it's a real hoot. They still sell it outside the U.S. where there's a deeper appreciation for small-bore sporties. The newer version looks like a baby Monster, complete with a visible trellis frame.



That CBR looks like a great ride. I hope they sell a lot of them.

I think the deep appreciation for smaller bore engines in other counties is their higher insurance and licensing fee's and requirements, true?



Seems like there is a trend (or want) for smaller bore bikes in the U.S., which have some "gitty up", which is stepping back from the bigger is better and faster mentality.



I remember when having a Honda 90, CB350, or Yamaho RD350/400 was the thing to have! Interesting to see bike size is coming full circle, albeit with better technology!

i believe the old cbr250 was a 4 cylinder and screamed, for example...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNCpMYNUszU. personally i'd rather have the single thumper for simplicity reasons, however i think many people in the sportbike market look more toward performance, which i'm sure the 4 banger 250 wins.


Indeed performance-wise the old four cylinder screamer 250's will definitely beat a modern Ninja or CBR 250. But the new CBR really isn't THAT far behind the old ones, I'd say it's about 75 to 80 percent.

Wow, way to go Honda. Very nice looking bike. I have an 07 Ninja 250...great bike...had an 08 also but didn't care for it that much so I sold it. Too bad its not a parallel twin though. The engine looks a bit dated but we'll wait for the test. I don't see it being as smooth as the Ninjas being that its single..but again, we'll see. Just came back from the Philippines and they have little CBR 150's that look real neat. Didn't ride one though. Small bikes can be a blast. Did a 6 day tour of West Virgina on my WR250R. Worked so well that I might sell my V-Strom 650.

Ugh! Another really nice bike that we can't get in the US. According to Wikepedia that 250 produces 32.1 HP @ 10500 RPM and 17.3 ft lbs @ 8500 RPM. It has a 3.4 gallon tank and I would bet it would get at least 65 mpg.



I am starting to develop a deep resentment for squids and posers. They are such a large portion of the US market, the manufacturers just laugh and give them what they want. Sorry, but I am just really pissed right now.

I couldn't agree more. The sensible motorcyclists among us have to suffer on account of the arrogance - founded purely on over-consumerism (bigger/more is better attitude), ignorance, and outright stupidity, NOT from any actual natural talent or developed skill, commonly exhibited by said squids and posers. They are the main reason we do not have more bikes in the US in the range of 250 to 500 cc.



PJ: I suppose I'd have to reluctantly agree with you...but I still like the new CBR250R a lot and I think Honda is definitely taking a step in the right direction. Hopefully other manufacturers will soon follow suit, and perhaps some true competition could even be re-injected into the small bore motorcycle segment of the US market.
