This is driving me Crazy.

I have a new digital relay for my turn lights. But when all wired up ither the left or right setting has them all flashing like hazzard lights. They have lost their ability to only flash the left or right side. Somewhere there is somthing happening in the electrial system that I do not fully understand.

Or am simply missing. Any input would be nice. I took a video to make it easyer to help me out!

Before looking at the video, just your description make me think you are crossing over with the ground somewhere.



But!!!



If this is an older bike, the problem may be the way the turn indicator lamp is powered.

Yamaha put the indicator lamp across the hot wires going to the turn lights figuring the voltage drop across it would keep the off side lights from glowing while using them as ground for the lamp. With LEDs the power required to light them up will easily flow thru the whole circuit lighting up everything.



To test for the old wiring condition, pull the indicator lamp from the dash and see if the signals work properly.

You totally solved the problem. I removed the turn bulb from the dash and it totally worked correctly.

I totally forgot to say the bike is a 1991. But you clued in right away with it being an older bike. Thanks a ton!! As soon as I fixed it 10 seconds later I was ripping around proudly useing my turn lights.. lol

Your explanation made so much sence now that I think about it. It would have taken be forever to figure that out.

I hope this post helps other people.



I don't really care if I have the bulb in the dash if it solves my problem. But just for the fun of being thorough I wonder if there is anyway to correct this?

Yup. LED indicator bulb for 2001 to current. Older TWs simply wire the indicator light into the wire from the flasher to the switch, putting the indicator parallel to the switch/turn lamp circuits, and the original bulb will work fine.

I'm looking at the schematic in the service manual. The light is just bridged across the two hot leads to the turn lights.



One way to put an indicator lamp back in is to build a half rectifier circuit that plugs in where the lamp is now. Two diodes facing each other to keep the power from crossing from one side to the other, then connect the positive of the indicator lamp in the middle and ground to frame. That will feed power to the indicator from either sides hot wires.



A few parts from Radio Shack, some soldering & heat shrink tubing and you could get your indicator working again.



qwerty: if I read the schematic correctly (page 7-35), a lamp connected to the single wire on the flasher side of the turn switch would flash constantly. The left-right-off in that switch is the only break in the circuit from battery to ground. Lamp from flasher to ground bypasses the switch.

Well, you could do all that, or just wire the indicator parallel to the switch and lamps like the newer models.

Wow... flashbacks to my ham radio days reading the schematics.



Looking at the newer schematic at first it appears that they might be using voltage drop across the flasher to power the indicator lamp?!?!?



Sort of... the lamp is lit when the flasher relay is open. This is why we get the indicator lamp flashing opposite the turn signal. On older wiring the lamp should flash with the turn signals. With the relay closed the power takes the path of least resistance through the relay to the turn lights, not leaving enough to light up the indicator lamp. With the relay open, the power flowing through the indicator lamp would not be enough to light up the incandescent bulbs. But I can see the same problem with having LED turn lights. There could be enough power running through the indicator lamp with relay open for the LED signals to stay on. The indicator lamp would flash but not the LED turn signals. The LED signals would stay on constantly or blink off momentarily, almost imperceptibly.
