Hi everyone is there a issue with running a new 47 tooth sprocket but using my old stock chain? I cleaned it up checked for binding and oiled it the thing seems good, money just a bit tight for now.

Sprockets and chains need to grow old together. However if you only had a couple hundred miles on everything it would be much less of a problem then if there were a couple of thousand miles on the gear.



Putting a new chain on a worn pair of sprockets will make the chain wear out faster—and replacing the sprockets without replacing the chain will wear out the sprockets faster.

Coincidentally enough I went from a 44 sprockets to a 47 and used the old sucky chain, that 47 sprocket was torn up in less than 3000 miles - the teeth were sharp enough to cut the heck out of you, totally trashed.



I assume you have not mounted the 47T yet - don't. Rip that piece of trash stock chain off the bike, buy a good 60-70$ O-ring chain as well as a new front sprocket (I assume you want the stock 14T) and never look back. You should easily see 20,000+ miles with a good chain and being O-ring means you can afford to slack on the maintenance much more, but not too much. spray it at least every 500 miles or so.

I hear you but money is a bit tight and the weather here in Toronto is going to get real crapy real soon so I have all winter to save up for a o ring chain can I atleast go another 500 miles or so with the stocker chain or will that mess up the new sproket. I'm dieing to try the 47 tooth.

A couple hundred miles shouldn't hurt if you take it easy. I'm always anxious to test ride any time I change anything too.

Rich, you really don't need pants but you should at least put some shoes on for safety reasons.

You should do what you need to. If it suits your budget better to run your stock chain for 500 miles, then that's what you have to do, unless you want to wait to run the new sprocket until you have the new chain. YOU control your budget, not anyone on here. Folks here just want you to know about cause and effect.

And if you run the old chain on the new sprocket, the only person here that will be bothered is Qwerty and I'm sure he has developed coping skills by this term of his life, but he may send you some info on chain abuse meetings!

I reckon that we need to pin a sticky thread with all the chain wisdom in it. It comes up again and again and even qwerty is tiring of repeating his sermons on the matter and leaving it to the converted to pass the message on. I cut and pasted his wisdom myself a moment ago.

Honestly, I'd just hold off. Going from a 50 to a 47 helps in 1st gear but why risk a new sprocket and have to buy twice. Even if the stock chain isn't binding and it's well oiled it could already be stretched. The 47 is nice, but the TW doesn't mind it if you run it strung out and therefore I think I'd hold off. That said, temptation sucks.
