Is there any reason to use a higher octane over a lower one? The price at the pump really doesnt matter to me because of such great milage. But will running a higher octane give a better performance over a lower? What octane rating do you use?

This has already been beaten to death innumerable times.

In a low compression engine, like the TW, there is no benefit to using any gas with higher octane rating than regular 87. Higher octane does not mean better - it means there are additives in the gas to prevent pre-ignition inside the cylinders of a high compression engine, they make the gas burn slower, and use of that gas in our engines actually produces less power and poorer overall performance and also will drain your wallet faster.

If your engine knocks or pings with regular gas and you use premium to prevent that, you are masking a problem with your engine, it is not the gas that's causing that, and in the long term if you don't correct the problem, it will cost you.

There is no benefit and no reason to use high octane fuel in the TW and Yamaha recommends regular gas, if you read the owner's manual.

Thanks. And I did a search for octane in the title and found nothing, so thats why I asked. I apologize for asking again. I did read the octane rating in the owners manual. But i dont think that the manufacturer is always right, case in point is the stock lean carb settings. I understand why, they did this, so no need of explanation. Ill stop wasting my money with the higher octane. Which is a good thing, so ill save up for more tw goodies....Thought i may be doing something better for my engine. Thanks Guys! ....

ps...after rereading this i thought it may come across a bit pissy. thats not the case....hope i didnt come across like that.....

I like my high octane and it's all I will ever put into a motorcycle. During winter, TW noticeably spudders more has a bit more trouble starting with the low octane. I ran a tank full back when I first purchased it back in 2008 and hated it. It even cut out on me while smashing up a steep, long hill :/

With mpgs over 60 and the fact that there's only 3 gallons to fill, you're really only spending an additional 1.00 or 1.50 at most. This minute difference in cost is easily offset by my own warm fuzzies I feel knowing I'm using the cleanest fuel I can.

It reallys seems as though TW is more responsive on higher octane too.

...just my own opinions here
