So best I can explain this symptom is when coming off or coming onto throttle a lurch or jerk forward or backward is felt in the bike. I don't know how to explain it any better, it's like as soon as the throttle is disengaged or decreased or increased while in any of the lower gears a kinda hard slump forward or backward is felt. Example: If I'm in second rolling at a held steady mid range rpm and I let off the throttle the bike feels like it slams forward or something. Is the throttle cable in need of adjustment? What is this? God I hope someone knows what I'm describing, it doesn't feel right at all and is not enjoyable to ride right now.

It could just be that the chain needs to be adjusted. Download the service manuals if you haven't already, and check to see if the chain adjustment is in spec.

That is exactly what I thought as soon as I read that description, looose chain.


Ok I just went and checked the chain slack and it was quite loose. I don't understand, I just adjusted this the other day and I haven't rode 10 miles probably since then. I'm not running the crappy stock chain either, I have one of the DID Rk chains on. Do you guys all have to adjust your chains that often? On an offroad outing how many times a day do you adjust? This seems crazy often to me.

Non o-ring chains stretch quite a bit and your sprockets could be worn out too. You have to change them as a set (front, rear and chain) to get the most life out of them. When I had the stock non o-ring chain on there I had to adjust it almost weekly. My stock chain and sprocket were shot by 5k miles. I put on new Yamaha sprockets in the stock size and an RK 'o-ring' chain and haven't had to adjust it in over 4k miles. Chain companies such as DID and RK make both o-ring and non o-ring chains. O-ring chains cost more but require less maintenance and last a long time. You can make non o-ring chains last longer if you are willing to due a lot of maintenance.

If your sprockets are older than the chain, or those few miles you rode were through a mud puddle and you didn't clean it afterwards, etc. that can wear it pretty quick.



Always clean and lube the chain after contact with water, dirt, or mud. But you might've forgot to tighten the axle all the way, so that could be it. Make sure that gets done.

I'm in the process of chaining my sprockets and chain (to an o-ring), but this past summer I've had to adjust my old stock chain more than ever. I knew I needed a new chain and sprockets, however, I've had to adjust my chain about after every other ride. I got about 6,000 miles out of the set with lots of maintenance, but I should have replaced everything about 1,000 miles ago similar to No2odiver.

I had to adjust my open (non o-ring DID Heavy Duty) chain every other ride also which was anywhere from 150-200 miles. I was anal about the maintenance too. I switched to an o-ring chain about 800 miles or so ago and have only had to adjust it once.



I'd get that jerky feeling with my bike too when I had an open chain. I couldn't believe how fast it would stretch. There were times I'd adjust the chain to proper specs in the morning and after 50 or so miles of hard riding it would stretch to the point that I'd have to adjust it when I got home.



Switch to an o-ring chain when your current one wears out if money and time permits.

I can't believe how fast it stretched! This chain and sprocket are both quite new actually but I'm popping on an O ring style now anyway, I don't want to futz with a chain this often. That's not enjoyable to have to bust out the wrenches for this thing every few hours of riding in my opinion. I mean it stretched so quickly I posted a thread asking you guys what was wrong with my bike. LOL That's pretty bad. Thanks for the common sense solution you guys.
