love the look of these open type air filters - but since it's y wife's commuter she will moan if it "konks" out in the rain

so there's my question... are these "showy" airfilters good for riding in the rain..

we would both love to have that open frame look - but not at the expense of practicality!

any comments much appreciated!

You might consider these water replellent pre-filters by Outerwears. I leave them on my Bonneville full-time and have never had trouble in some pretty heavy rain. Still that's not the same as muddy backroads, but I bet you'd be okay with these air filter covers on the street.

They offer black or red covers for almost every size filter.

prove it. Your saying not even 1hp. More air + More Gas= More HP.
Try this. Remove the air filter and side cover from the stock air box. Ride the bike around the block and see if it has more power. Probably not. While you're at it remove the stock muffler, tape some magnets to the fuel line and paint a racing stripe on the tank. They will all have the same affect.

Simply removing the stock filter will probably cause the bike to run lean, negating any effect of reduced pumping loss. Rejet the carb to restore power, but expect the powerband to be different due to the loss of intake tuning and/or airflow smoothing.

Pod filters work fine in the rain. A pod filter on a stack may make more power if the carb is jetted for it.

A pod filter may outflow and out-power the stock filter if other engine mods are done.

Hey dubstep (or anyone else who has done a right side plastic cover delete), I need one, preferably in white. Is there anyone out there who can hook me up? Mine fell off while making a mud-run (the roads were closed) to pick up some prescriptions in the aftermath of the flooding caused by hurricane Lee.

I know this is off-topic, but I just couldn't pass up such an opportune thread such as this to pose the question.

I wonder how wet you get without the rear fender?

I would think without all the back plastic the back tire would be flinging everything right at that open filter.

By just removing the cover is a poor comparison to the Air Pod so is removing the stock muffler. Probably not is not a definite answer or proof as well. I wonder why those drag cars don't have air filters hm....Must be to slow them down or take off over half the exhaust too...... . Don't be pissed at me cause you bought those magnets and painted those stripes on yours. Probably .Qwerty had a better response.

Yeah Dan! It's a proven fact that if you take a Honda civic and install a really loud exhaust and an air filter from an f-350 it instantly becomes a race car. How dare you imply the same thing doesn't hold true for a TW!!

how does this help? Any car is a race car,any bike is a race bike ect.. If you compete in any vehicle it becomes a Race ______. Race means the act of running. try again.

Chill, people. Different uses have different filtration needs. If one does not know enough to make an educated decision, better to stay with the stock system. Most mods to vehicles seem to be misapplied and actually cost overall performance and create problems because they compromise the balances built into the system, while making more noise.

The TW makes one horsepower per cubic inch, a stratospheric output ratio considering the 1970's technology upon which it is built, mind-boggling considering the output ratio is developed with fuels 15 octane points below that required by comparable auto engines of the period. It is a very high performance engine for its day, and that performance was generated by very carefully choices of tuning parameters such as intake tract volume, airflow rates in the intake and exhaust, and incorporating a reverse cone megaphone exhaust, all while meeting mandated noise and spark arresting functions, under constraints of stylists and accountants. Do you really think you can do any better?

Thanks qwerty, I now have a new appreciation for my TW!

Hi TWiumph - sorry for my slow reply on this.. I am the procrastinator mechanic extraordinaire - and a follower of if it aint broke dont fix it!

HOWEVER - the time has come to make some moves so thanks for this!

but its a bit "pricey"

and you think the WR250 is the same size as the TW?

cheers!
