Well im in it to win it now. With My TW in the shed in various peices ive come across some very real problems with buying a used cycle. Firstly there was the problem that started it all the cobbled pulsar coil that busted while i was riding , it was not oem and only measured 125ohms but it was working fine until it gave out. Next was issues with wiring weakness i found on dissassembly and repaired .Then on to a bad exaust valve and worn out piston that my machine shop found while doing a top end rebuild. Another problem i found caused by an assinine PO was a missassembled kicker that led to its demise. So what i thaught a good deal for $500 is now nearly $1000 worth of aggrivation and parts. im just hoping now that the running issues i had before tear down were caused by the tired top end and not a CDI or stator, as i have read that the CDI for this 89 black and red is not an easy part to come by these days. To top it off im having a difficult time trying to find any moto salvage yards here in upstate ny so i have to buy new parts or e-bay it. Well buyer beware next time im taking it to a mechanic before i buy it . anyone else have any horror stories about buying a used TW ?

Hey I am in Upstate NY and had a pretty piss-poor experience buying a used TW recently as well... Still in pieces and not running, in fact. Maybe we should start a club

Where abouts are you located? That would make three of us with TWs in NNY, but only one known working

ja, up north around canada eh

In all fairness to the guy I bought my TW from, the CDI was fine when I got it. The fork seals were blown, it needed an oil change something fierce, the chain was worn out, the plastics busted, had obviously been jumped by a fat man and tipped over quite at least a couple of times at decent speed. Mirrors were missing, handlebars were cracked/bent/broken, so on and so on.

It was an impulse buy and I can only blame myself!

Your guys stories reminded me of a time I traded and old Jeep for a Triumph TR6 motorcycle. As we were driving away each of us had a funny grin on our face as though we had gotten the better part of the deal. A few months later, our paths crossed again and I asked the guy who he thought ended up getting the better deal. He said he thought I did, and I agreed. The truth was that both vehicles were total POS. It was nice that we were still able to laugh about it with each other.

does anyone in here know if the mix of a bad piston/rings and worn out exaust valve would cause an engine to run good at idle but not allow you to rev it up without it sounding/acting like its having a spasam and quit just wondering if i should look for updated electronics while im rebuilding this engine

Well today i finally got back my top-end from the machine shop $100 and 3 weeks later. He ended up needing a new exaust valve as the one in her was bent as i suspected. Now the only thing i need to get finshed is my clutch boss and holding tool. While i was attempting to repair my kick start i realized that the idle wheel was not installed properly so when i removed the clutch without the tool and went to reassemble two of the standoffs used to hold the clutch spring busted off BUMMER! Though while i was in there i noted the basket had some nice grooves in it so i took the chance to file them out and clean everything up, in hopes that was the cluch slippage problem the bike had in 5th gear. Im hoping to get to put her together tomorrow after work as much as possible im going to try to take some pics and post them up here . now im really going to be bummin if the cdi did get fried.

It's ok man... read the end of the cdi thread... I have a couple hundred miles on my ttr ignition conversion and will post new pics shortly. It was cheap and "easy" (just like they all should be)

Keep on keepin on. I know how it is to sit around with a useless bike. You should be proud of your "sticktoitiveness" rather than selling at a loss like many would do!

Well Today I had off so i decided to get working on putting my Tw back together. I managed to get everything back together fine. I got her to start and run long enough to verify that the top end was getting oil and that it would rev up so i dont need a CDI thank god. But now I have a completely new issue the sidecover blew out around my kickstarter it was cracked before but i didnt think anything of it, but now i dont dare try to run it like that so back to ordering parts i go hi-ho hi-ho. Oh i did get some pictures to post while i was working i will try to post them in the next day or so .Anyone have any good sources on a right side cover ?

well I promised pictures !

cobbled pulsar coil that started the whole ordeal

then some more parts in need of replacement

while i was waiting for parts my poor bike looked like a skeleton

then finally my parts all came in

and so I began re-assembly

I was in heaven until my side cover blew out

I have already ordered one from e-bay, I had the guy take some close up pics and it was in really good shape (no cracks) being shipped from NJ so I should be back in business next week:) I also learned that the crank-case is under compression and will not run when it is blown out like mine

Do you know what caused it to blow out? I would hate to see it happen all over if there is an unfixed underlying issue.
