Hello: Should a newbe attempt to clean a pilot circuit/carb, or is this a dealer thing?

I would say that if you are at all mechanically inclined, go for it. Take your time and read up on it before you start. It is relatively easy, but like many things, a bull in the china closet approach can also make it relatively expensive.

The hardest part is finding a JIC screwdriver to fit what looks to be Phillips screws on the loat bowl an top cap. The screw heads are easily stripped with the wrong driver. My solution is to remove the screws with ViceGrips if that's what it takes and replace them with stainless allen heads.



Plenty of instructions available for carb cleaning. Search this site and study the appropriate repair manual and parts explosion so you have some idea of what little pieces fall out from where.

The factory tool kit is JIS, albeit of poor quality. If your float bowl screws haven't already been boogered up by some P.O. and you haven't invested in a set of JIS and the tips of your tool kit screwdrivers haven't been destroyed, try using them first before the vice grips and you may be able to reuse the screws until you can replace them with allens.
