Last week I had the idea of installing a luggage box on the back of my TW. I didn't want to pay much for it so I went through my workshop looking for something that I could recycle and use as a box. As most of you, I had one to many power tool box taking space on the shelf. At this point I was saying to myslef : "I'm so clever, I must be the only guy in the world to came with such a good idea". A quick search on the forum revealed that many of you had this same exact idea before! What the ?!?

So I decided to take some pictures along the process of making/installing my homemade luggage box to share this experience with you.

First I took a plastic box from a Milwaukee power sander.

Using my Dremel Multimax I remove the inner mold.

I didn't like the red colour so I gave it a shot of black paint.

I went to the hardware store and bought four u-bolts with brackets.

Then I took some measurements and marked the future holes for the bolts.

Drilled small holes first.

Then bigger ones.

Eight of them.

I put the U-bolts in the holes. You will see in the next pictures why I set them this side up.

Tighten everything securely.

Now I'm able to use bungee cords in the box to make sure nothing move while riding.

Just like that.

And a final look.

As you can see, it's quite simple to do. I hope it can help you making your own luggage box if you need one. It's always possible to save some bucks if you take time to take advantage of the stuff you have laying around that serves nothing but collecting dust!

Very nice job on the rear box! Your how-to photos will make it so much easier for others to follow. Appreciate the presentation...

I knew a fellow that put together a durable and inexpensive side pac system for his Mt. bike. He used small high quality Rubbermaid trash cans. He sewed up water proof stretchable fabric covers. System seemed to work great and he sold a number of them over the gears. He called them 'canniers'. Gerry

Thank you guys!

The only thing I would do differently is the paint. I used Rustoleum Universal spray paint. It did a really good job for my inside door panels of my Jeep. I can kick them and the paint doesn't even scratch. But on that tool box it seems to stay softer and is more prone to chipping. It might be my fault since I forgot to clean the box with tinner before applying the paint... too much enthusiasm, you know...

Nice. I had not thought about using the U-bolts like that, I like the ability to strap stuff inside the container.

Nice. I would be doing that if I didn't already have my fuel pak on my factory rack.
