Problems starting in cold weather

I'm having problems getting my bike started in cold weather. Yesterday morning it was about 20 degrees out and I got my bike started after it was sitting in the garage just fine and rode downtown. Later that day it was about 15 degrees and the bike wouldn't start. When I tried it you could hear to try to start but then it would just click. I have had some issues with the battery in the past so I took the battery out and took it home and charged it.

This morning I put the fully charged battery back in bike and it still won't start. It no longer makes the clicking sound but can't fully turnover, its about 15 degrees out again. So right now its freezing outside, I'm stuck in a bar, my girlfriend is pissed at me and I have no way home.

Yank the battery out and take it and have it load tested. I think its time for a new one, seeing how it has been problematic in the past.

If the carb is adjusted, they start fairly easily under a wide range of temps. If it is still factory adjusted which is on the lean side, an easy fix is to go out with the fuel/air mixture screw a little, that can work wonders. You might try some Lucus Deep Fuel Cleaner, it works very well and you might not have to open the carb.

The Lithium iron batteries are quite a bit smaller, alot less weight and have equal if not more amps than lead acid (nothing wrong with lead acid batteries mind you). If it is 15 deg. , 10w oil may be to much.....check the manual, possibly a 5w oil is needed also. At start up is when oil is critical.

My 99 would only run with the choke on and it was a crack in the intake boot. It is easy to check. When you have it at idle spray carb cleaner around the intake boot. If the idle picks up then it is sucking carb cleaner in through a crack. It was an easy fix. If that is the issue, also order the O ring.

Sounds like solid advice, and mine won't run this morning either. This bike has been soooo reliable until just now. It will fire off and idle for several seconds and then nothing. Won't fire off again for a long time, and now I've worn the batt down.

Batt on charger, maybe better luck later. Pretty frustrating.

ride in winter/cold too. my tw push starts really easy & I've heard people say it will run with no battery at all. (tried to jump start my 'ol 93 klr650 first---never tried this on the klr before---but it's so dumb & heavy & tall I tipped it over when i was getting my leg over it! so now it has 1,000,001 dings.)
