I'm thinking was getting another bike soon (currently have the Yamaha TW200, which I'll probably keep) and was looking along the lines of:



Kawasaki 650R

Triumph Street Triple

Ducati Monster 696

Ducat Monster 796

Aprilia SHIVER 750

Yamaha Fazer8

Yamaha FZ8

BMW F800

Suzuki V-Strom





What are your recommendations?

Suzuki's V-strom isn't naked, and neither is their GSX650F, but if you're looking for a somewhat sporty standard, the 650 is a nice one.

Not realy a naked bike. It's a street legal Tracker from the UK being made in small numbers using a DRZ400 engine. Lighter than a DRZ.

Company is CCM, this model is the FT35. They do a 750 flat tracker too.

The Daytona 675R (same fantastic motor as the street triple, but tuned differently) is currently number two on my MASSIVE motorcycle wish list.



The Suzuki V-Strom will be the most useful, practical, and reliable among the options you have listed. As much as I LOVE Ducati and Aprilia (although I seem to remember the last video review of the Shiver that I saw not impressing me much), I would stay away from those if you want solid long-term dependability and ease of maintenance. I'm not really a big fan of the FZ8, personally. This is relatively speaking, of course - it IS on my wish list mentioned above, just a lot lower down than a lot of other bikes. Same for the F800 - not a bad bike but I just don't see anything in it that I find particularly exciting or spectacular (again, compared to so many other options). I'd rather have the Triumph Tiger 800XC. The Ninja offers the best performance/dollar ratio, and the street triple would be the sportiest in your list. I really like the Ninja but if those were my two options and initial purchase price wasn't an issue, I'd go with the street triple - 105 hp/great suspension and chassis, and looks cool too!



Basically for me, if sticking to your list and assuming you can afford any of them, it would be narrowed down to the V-strom or the Street Triple. The V-strom: great value for the money, super reliable commuter that you can have some fun with on the weekends.



The triple: a bit more pricey and not quite as practical for day to day use, but offering by far the best mix of reliability and ear-to-ear grin inducing performance.



Please let us know which bike you buy! I want pictures, and video if possible!

Another consideration...how tall are you? I love the V-Strom (and a few other bikes like the BMW 1200GS, Ducati Hypermotard, KTM 950, and yeah even the Buell Ulysses) but I just don't feel comfortable on them with the tall seat heights...the Buell was the easiest to lower, IIRC. The BMW can be had with a lower seat, again IIRC.



My Suzuki Bandit 1200S was a great bike and had a decent seat height. AND it was wicked fast with the "detuned" GSXR motor. ha ha The nice thing about the Bandit is you can take one and make it just about anything you want! Mine was modified Sport-Tourer style with handlebar riser, extended windscreen, bags, etc. but you can have them in the truly naked platform (non-S), lightly "fairing'd" (S), kits to make them completely fairing'd ( example http://www.oneidasuzuki.com/store/parts-accessories/gsf1250-bandit-lower-fairing-kit-2007-08.html ), and I even saw one set up for blasting down fire roads!

The later models are 650/1250 and fuel injected/liquid cooled vs the earlier 600/1200 air/oil cooled carbureted models (I won't get into the earlier 250/400s).



I sold my Bandit and bought an older Goldwing, with plans to eventually get either a newer Goldwing or a BMW 1200GS if I can ever get used to the higher seat of the Beemer.

My inseam is 29, but bikes that are 31"ish fit me fine.



I like your Buell suggestion, because I totally forgot about Buell.

I wouldn't look at Buell. The company shut down in 2009. I was never a fan anyway (no offense to anyone who was, they just didn't appeal to me in any way).

Yeah that's why I said "even the Buell Ulysses." HD still claims to support/service Buells, and the design somewhat lives on in the full race bikes (Erik Buell Racing) so in theory they're still quasi-supporting the bikes. I was always a fan of the forward-thinking designs of the Buells, but the execution wasn't always as sound. I still like the Ulysses anytime I see one. For as tall as they are, the "mass centralization" actually makes them feel a lot less heavy than some of the other bikes I've been on.

I just bought a bike, 2006 Kawasaki 650R: http://www.gtamotorc...400-a-good-deal (My wife will get the TW200 to learn on)



While this isn't a naked bike, it has a comfortable ride position and really is the same as the Kawasaki ER-N.

Congrats...nice looking bike! Those tires look familiar. I think I had a set of those on the Bandit at one time. Enjoy!

I was wondering about those. I saw a few on the big island of HI when I was there, along with all the Ruckus and Zuma scoots. Cool stuff!

Congrats on the new ride. Looks great! Personally I have to admit I would have been pretty concerned about that many miles for that price. But anyway, the 650 is a fantastic machine; you will enjoy it for sure! And hopefully it doesn't break down on you in five thousand miles. Best of luck with it and have fun!



Edit: Sorry, I tend to forget about the differences in dollar values between the U.S. and Canada, lol. Considering that, I'm sure it probably was a great deal.





Rich: I like that bike. Great styling and seems like it'd be a lot of fun. I'd totally buy one! I like that it has chain drive and disk brakes. And even passenger pegs haha, nice!
