Wildfire smoke made first few days of practice kind of hazy but things are calm and clear for today's championship finale. Friday a new biplane speed record was set at ~289mph. The unlimited Warbirds can lap at over 500mph. Neat to see and hear some of these 70 year old planes down on the deck.

The pilots really have to bring their A-game to an inherently dangerous sport, fortunately no incidents so far this year. The accompanying static displays, acrobatics and other class races are all very entertaining. A lot of birds can be caressed, crawled through, pilots chatted up. Last time I went I watched while relaxing in the shade under a A-10 Warthog's 30mm barrel cluster, it is that relaxed and informal. There are F-16 cockpits one can climb into and various simulators hosted by recruters for Air Force and Navy.
I really enjoy air shows. .

Well would you believe that another "Hoot" Gibson won the National Unlimited Championship yesterday? You just can't make that stuff up.
Somebody should tell Pat that someone else is using his moniker, and in the meantime he could probably get many a free beer in our local taverns by just mentioning his name.;)Robert "Hoot" Gibson Wins Unlimited Race in Strega - KTVN ...

I was wondering if that "Hoot" Gibson was the former astronaut.

Turns out it is. I have a picture stashed somewhere of "Hoot" and myself at a Civil Air Patrol conference years ago.

He was flying Piper Cubs in his spare time, and I was flying Cessnas.

Several years ago I was poking around Placid Lakes Airport when I passed a large hanger with an open door. Looking in I saw a nice PBY and on the other side....Precious Metal!! Never expected to find an Unlimted P-51 tucked into a little backwater airport. Turns out Metals owner has a house there and sometimes flys in to visit. Great bunch of guys and they let me look around all I wanted. Just wish the camera was not forgotten.
