I took my bike in for a check over and to have them replace the rear turn indicators with aftermarket indicators I purchased from the shop.



They were going to charge me $47 but then it went up to $80 when they found out I wanted to replace both. I know, I was shocked they didn't know I wanted to replace both either. This seems really steep, but another dealer quoted me $130.



I am a little confused. Can I do this myself?

Wow, all those prices seem high to me. Do the quoted prices include the new indicators or is that all for labor?



I just replaced my rear turn signals a few weeks ago with some shorter ones that I got at Cycle Gear on sale for $9.95. It is not difficult to do this yourself (depending upon your electromechanical skills and what tools you have available), but it is a little more involved than just plug and play.



The stock signals just come unplugged from the wiring harness. The aftermarket signals usually don't use exactly the same size connectors or have exactly the same length of wires, so you should expect that you may need to either tighten up the female connectors or crimp on new male connectors, and possibly splice on a small length of wire if you need some extra length. The rest of it is just unbolting the old, rebolting the new, and ziptying the wires to the subframe.

I went an retrieved my bike yesterday and the parts guys were a little shocked at the price to install the new indicators. They actually said they were going to being it up to management. Service wouldn't even look at my bike since they weren't installing the indicators, so that was a wasted four hours of trailering the bike around. I am so thankful my neighbor lent me his trailer as that made things a whole lot easier.



I bought the aftermarket indicators at the dealer and they came with some some wiring, so I went the the hardware store and bought some connectors.



There is NO reason I can't do this myself. Sheesh. $80 saved.
