total tw rookie here, just brought a 1988 tw with 6000 miles, seller said it sat for 1 yr.{just change old gas, rebuild carb and should run fine}, HA, 600.00$ later bike still won't run. my mechanic got it to idle ok but when you add thottle it wants to break up, he's wondering if there is a rev governor somewhere he is missing. any respnse would help, thank you

I'd think you have a ignition or carb problem

Was the carb rebuilt with an aftermarket kit or OEM Yamaha parts. There are many kits that are duds out there. Most time all a carb needs is a good cleaning.

If one of these carb circuits are not working it tends to mess everything up

* pilot circuit

* throttle valve

* needle jet and jet needle

* main jet

* choke circuit

I'd browse Qwerty's carb thread http://tw200forum.co...47-carb-tuning/

I've been your route. 1980 kz750- 2 bike shops, 3 months, hundreds of dollars and I ended up getting it running myself. Learned my lesson and will NOT do it again. For better or worse I am my own mechanic.

I can't imagine a tdub that idles being more than a few adjustments from running. Clean carb, good/correct plug, no smoke, stock air box?

Idle air screw. Bottom side of carb, just before it enters engine. Pull that carb and screw in the idle air screw all the way. Then count your rotations and turn it out 3 turns. Do it yourself.

I always had the idea that mechanics and bike shops just knew what they were doing. This isn't the case. They guess at it, same as us, same as you. Educated guesses everyone, but guesses. The difference is they charge $50 an hour to guess. And when they're wrong your $600 in and it still won't take throttle. Use the forum. You get pissed and fed up working on the bike while the forum has a clear head and can suggest the next step and next best guess. JMHO

Could it be an 87? could be a cdi problem. You can try unpluggung the brown wire that runs to the cdi. If you can give it throttle with that wire unplugged you have a bad cdi. Don't leave it unplugged and try to ride it. You will cause damage to the motor

the title for bike says it is a 1988, but i will try unplugging brown wire anyway, thanks for the idea

Make sure he has cleaned out the petcock screen too.

Old gas can turn to jelly and block real fuel flow.

I think most stock carb kits are like gaskets and float needles etc.

The original jetting is very lean and needs mods.
