i just got this bike a couple of days ago, i haven't had a chance to run it for more than 10 minutes. the problem im having is that the idle is very rough, when i first got it it wouldn't stay running, i fix that by setting the idle screw a little bit higher, but the bike still feels likes its about to die. can this be the cdi? or maybe carburetor related? any help is appreciated.

Make sure some yayhoo didn't cap off your tank vent.

Pretty common mistake among certain dinks unclear on the Cali system. Make sure you didn't pinch the line to the carb or canister if you've had the tank off.

Easy to check. Leave the fuel cap off and see if it still dies. Then move on.

the guy i got the bike from, got it from a old lady that only drove it 300 miles since she got it new, it was sitting for 2-3 years, then the guy that got it got it running again, he kreemed the gas tank, clean carburetor, install jet kit, install fmf exhaust and only put 400 miles on her in 2 years. bikes starts really easy, but idle is bad and sometimes turns off. can this be fixed with the air mixture needle? i also took the gas cap off and it didnt help, it seems to run a little better after it warms up, but it stills turns off by itself, only way to keep her running is setting idle screw a little higher.

ok i took it for a 20 minutes drive, when im high of the rpm the bike starts to stutter, and when im at a stop sign the bike doesnt turn off, but idles good for 2-3 seconds then it feels like it about to cut, but then idle goes back to normal for another 2-3 seconds then does it again... i checked all fuel lines and the look fine, no cracks on intake or leaks on exhaust, oh and it backfires from the exhaust when i let off the gas.

I know almost nothing but I would "think" the backfire when you let off the gas would indicate a lean condition....

ok i was playing with the air fuel mixture screw and now it idles perfect.. but when i open the throttle all the way very fast the bike turns off, but if i open it slow and not wot it doesn't die. the bike has a 117.5 jet installed.

Jet kit? You're on your own. Go to the carb tuning stickie and use the butt dyno method of adjustment. Don't be surprised if you need a new slide before it's all said and done.

Your bike is lean. WAY lean. From the look of the plug it's been running that way for some time. With a 117.5 (Goofy size. Some kinda Keyster thing?)) it shouldn't be. You're sucking air somewhere, your jets are clogged...sumpin' ain't right.

Kreme should be against the law.

Check the boot from the carb to the intake for cracks/holes as this can cause an air leak. They shrink and crack with age, and is an easy fix.

i checked and everything was fine, i cleaned the carb, install a 122.5 jet and played with the pilot screw until i got it running smooth(i still have surging at very high rpms but its running good and strong).. today its snowing and it started right up with choke on, i took it for a ride and 3 minutes later it died and didnt want to start, i let it sit for 1-2 minutes and it will start again. when its not cold around 80f it runs fine, but today is 30f and its snowing and im having trouble with idle and keeping it running. oh and can a bad battery cause the motorcycle to die when its idling?

CDI symptoms? Runs good til heats up then dies and wont start til it cools.

You installed a new jet so I assume you cleaned carb while you were at it. No sign of dislodged kream?

I wonder if that pipe provides enough back pressure. The lack thereof causes lean condition if I'm not mistaken.

And to finally answer your question, no. Maybe in some rare case where the charging system had a fault, but mine had a dead as a door nail battery while I was restoring it and I ran it for a few weeks like that. Lights and turn signals acted goofy but bike ran fine.

i dont think its the cdi because a couple of days ago it was running fine, but now that its cold outside its giving me problems, yes i cleaned carburetor , no signs of kream dislodge. i will check it tomorrow to see if i can get it running, im going on a 2000 trip on her all the way up to cabos san lucas... i need it running in top shape. thanks for the help, you guys gave me more ideas on what could be wrong, i will check and double check everything tomorrow.

i think its the carburetor giving me problems, it might be too lean, when i first got it was running lean, dying and back firing a lot, i change the jet from 117.5 to 122.5 and it stopped the back fairing and it was idling good, today the temp changed from 80F to 30F.. could be cause the bike to run lean again? i really dont want to buy a bigger, is there other way to increase the fuel with out replacing the main jet?
