actually I did recently have this 94 YJ my buddy bought new and used it to launch his boat at Havasu only has 6200 miles 4" lift properly done which required extensive transfer case output shaft mods

never spent a night out doors

I paid $21k and flipped for $26k to a guy who had the exact same Jeep in High school his dad gave him and it got stolen so he was thrilled to get it his even had the same Champ 500 style wheels back in the day

but this was the 6 cyl no oil hammer which to me is the thrill

ever since I saw Randalls ROXOR at MOAB this year I have been drooling over them and was wondering if anybody else here has one or has experience with them?

I like the grill style on Randalls I think it's like the 2018 style the current grills look horrible but they say they are same as CJ bodies so maybe I can swap a really USA Jeep grille

I have not seen a used one for under $19,995 but might even just buy one in a no sales tarrif / penalty state to try one out

any impressions would be great

It's time for me to get a side by side but I hate the CVT over revving belt system I like to lug and put like a TW so the Honda Pioneer is the next best thing I have found at least they have a manual transmission and clutch like a bike would have and the ROXOR would be in that category too

I heard the new computer controlled CVT even mimic "gears" and shift points etc so maybe those would be cool too

I saw a Maverick Trail in Colorado when I picked up my blue 2016 TW and that narrow 50" with all the CanAm goodness looked like run!
Nice play on the VW emblem.

Imagine how many old school Toyota Hi-Lux diesel pick ups they could have sold in the USA
I agree. When you look at the details of a Hi-Lux (or Pre-Tacoma) truck, they were much more robust. There's a reason why it's the most popular DIY military vehicle in some of the poorest countries.

Just catching up a bit. I had a couple of sxs's and I would never give up the roxor for one. some of the sxs's go for incredible amounts of money. Just down the road here they redo cj7s and go out the door north of 60,000. They can't get enough donor rigs. They rebuild them from the axles up, beautiful jeeps.
The one I have was bought from a powersports outfit. Before I even took it out for a ride I had the engine chipped and speed limiter taken off.
Stock 2019 60hp 45mph. It has 3.73 gearing in the axles runs 60mph at 2000 rpm, same as most pickups. Did use a cj windshield with wipers and built the cab myself.
I have 2 cj7s, one an 85 the other a 77 with the 304 v8. I dropped a 350 chev in the 85 as I did a frame off on it.
I would not trade the roxor for either of them. It will crawl right on by them without ever touching the throttle. I have had it run flat out to 84mph by gps observation. speedo only goes to 60. I use it almost daily here around town and maybe fill it once every two months.
The newer ones have 5.38 gearing to slow them down so not as easily to do any highway speeds. Great for off road poking around. For the most part I keep mine in low and enjoy the scenery as I poke along. It amazes me how well it takes on most terrain that you would be throttling a gas engine at an idle. As far as the gears though, they can be changed out as they are same as jeep.
The grill looks like a jeep one but it is stock. I just covered it up with a screen to give it the more jeep like look. You can buy an aftermarket slotted grill for them though.
This one I will keep till I am feeding daisys. Oh btw, I have a full plate on mine and have run down the freeway without any issues.

Just my .02 Cents...

I'm not a fan of SXS's. I've rented a handful from pedestrian farm-type units fitted with larger wheels and tires to stock RZR's. All the ones I've driven have had the CVT Transmission which was clunky at low speeds and required revving to the moon at any speed faster then a walking pace.

That said, I do recognize that they do have their place in the off-road world. Two of my retired friends have them since they are of the age where riding a bike or a Quad are no longer an option. I also previously had a girlfriend who wasn't able to ride a Quad or a bike because of a knee injury, however she loved driving a SXS. Plus she felt safer strapped-in to a vehicle.

I won't get into the irresponsible SXS's users who damage trails since there are bad seeds in all facets of the off-road world.

All that said, here is my version of a SXS which for me has a lot more usefulness. Street-legal, able to be flat-towed, has a modern powertrain (I swapped a 2.5L Fuel Injected Subaru engine into the car in the picture) which just about any shop can work on if-needed. Room for four with harnesses and a full-cage. Plus, cup holders LOL!

The car in the pic cost about as much as a stock SXS. All in it's about the same cost as a fully-modded SXS. On a Chassis Dyno a year ago it made 190HP at the rear wheels and it probably has more in it but I have it tuned very conservatively and have a very restrictive air intake on it. I have it geared very low but it can maintain highway speeds easily.

Where I live (CA) Roxor's are not street-legal and I think all the dealers which used to sell them in my area, have stopped. Plus the ones I've looked at did not have very robust suspensions. I've also heard that Roxor's are not legal for use in National Parks. I vacation every year in Utah so being able to drive my off-road vehicle legally into places like Arches and Canyonlands are a must for me.

My point is, keep your options open. I also have a street-legal Manx 'Buggy which has been to Moab ten times. The Manx cost a lot less to build then the Thing. Good non-authentic Manx Buggies can be had for the price of a new SXS and again, most (if not all) are street-legal.

Feel free to PM if anyone wants more info.

my interest is a diesel 4x4

I also hate the CVT but now there are several side by sides with transmissions and paddle shifters starting with the Yamaha 1000's and now Honda Talon and Pioneer etc and I plan to buy one of those as well

the Roxor is kind of a niche machine similar to the TW200 theres nothing quite like it in the USA

Well that is cool. I've been lusting over purple buggy (link below) for a few years now. I'd love to take something like that cross-country, Mad Max style:cool:

This green "woods" buggy for $12,500 is pretty cool too

I almost bought this in New Mexico, but the owner decided to keep it. 1969 Manx Tow'd

Yeah. Another option is a VW AHU TDI with an Acme kit. You can find AHU's on the '92-'97 Jetta & Golf diesels. I also have the later ALH TDI, but the AHU is a much easier swap

Very nice! About ten years ago I built a Tow'd. Mine was red and rode on 31" tires in the front and 33's in the rear. I had a VW Transaxle built with lower gearing to turn those tires. It was powered by a pretty basic dual-port 1600. It was the first (and thus far, only) 'nice' car I've built. I took it on a handful of off-road 'Buggy runs and enjoyed the car, though it was too small for two average-sized adults to ride in and had next to no room to carry much anything else. I ended-up selling it to a guy in France. 'Buggies fetch big $$ in Europe! Selling that 'Tow'd paid for a paint job on my brown 'Buggy, my P/U and bought another Quad I'd had my eye on for a while.

None of my neighbors can understand why I haven't bought a SXS (I have Quads, Dual-sport bikes, two VW-based 'Buggies.and a Tacoma 4x4). One of the largest reasons is because where I live (CA) there is no way to make them street-legal. In AZ I know that's not the case, though for my uses if I lived there I'd still probably have a VW-based 'Buggy so that I could drive freely into and out of National Parks, State Parks and National Monuments. Everyone's needs are different though.

I agree that the Roxor's fill a Niche, much like those Kei Trucks from Japan which people sometimes build-up for off-road. Maybe I need to see one in action but when my local Powersports Dealer was selling Roxor's I looked at one pretty closely (I liked that they wern't a SXS) but I saw a lot of inadequacies which for the way I would use it, would need to be addressed. Their narrow track-width also made it look like it would be "tippy" off-road. Again though, my experience with them is limited to looking at a stock one in a parking lot. This was back when they looked like Jeep's. I've not looked at one since they were forced to change the body style.

I'll be four-wheeling soon in the Cottonwood/Crown King area so maybe I'll finally get to see a Roxor on the trail!

I don't get the CVT hate. My 2019 Kawasaki Mule FX has it, and it kinda reminds me of the 1956 Buick I had with the Dynaflow tranny which at first felt odd, but I later learned to love it. Anyway, the Mule runs up to 45mph before hitting the speed limiter & I am fine with it.

I bought that Buick off a used car lot in Tyler TX in the mid 80's for $900....not a spot of rust on it & 100% original condition(wait, it was missing the dome light cover🙄). Drove it back and forth to work for a year before re-locating to FL.....could not take it with me. Sold it to a friend's Dad for ....yep....$900. ....."sniffling, ....while kicking a can down the street....."

The roxor has the width of the earlier cj5 and 7. Width of body is the same.

As there isn't much tw trails here I picked up a three wheeler to put some wind in my face. View attachment 233347
Certainly rather sporty-looking Santa Sleigh for sure. Did you pick this color to go along with your Santa Suit? Hahaha, I mean Hohoho!
