What is the best way to clean a rusty gas tank?

thanks,

Ken
It depends on how rusty, I've used 1/2 to 3/4 quarry stone inside the tank and keep shaking and rolling to knock the loose rust free. Then a good sloshing with kerosene to flush it, and then use a good fuel filter from then on. There are some commercial coating available like Kreem. I still like to get it real clean first.

Darn alcohol blended fuels attract water and makes the tanks rust that much faster.

Past fuel tank cleaning thread.. http://tw200forum.co...1/ShowPost.aspx

When I put my clarke tank on I doused the innards of my pristine rust free stock tank with a mix of wd40, lps 3 and boesheild. Bubble wrapped it and put it on a shelf. Whenever I do sell the bike I will be able to give them a perfect tank.

Anyway this idea looks like a fun way to agitate your tank.

Most of the acid based cleaners ( muratic, bowl cleaners, phosphoric
& ect ) do a great job dissolving rust buuuuuut tanks will quickly rust again unless you dry them fast & coat them with something.

Here are some tank cleaning and sealing kits ( I've heard a few complaints about the durability of "kreem sealant" )

It's a good idea to remove and seal up your petcock hole before starting.

Do not let any of the sealing goo get into your petcock screen or in the petcock !!!!

Oh I'll throw in a couple of ADV tank cleaning threads for good measure

Electyrolysyisis gets it ALL out, and removes nothing but the rust. Not quick, but cheap and dirty and far superior to any of the other methods. The bigger the charger, the quicker the results.

Vinegar is fine for a neutralizer, and cheap ATF or motor oil sloshed on the interior will keep surface rust from hazing your shiny clean tank.

IMO coatings are bandaids. But if you've got pinholes, leaky seams or a really rare tank they'll get you by til you can off the bike or find a good tank. Never found any of them worth a dang in the long term. Electrolysis is still a good plan for completely neutralizing underlying rust before using them.

Oxalic acid will eat rust and dirt without dissolving the steel as Acid or electolysis will

Oxalic Acid can be found in wood bleach or deck washes

Read the labels and be careful it is a poison and needs to be repected.

i also put in a handful of gravel small enough to come out as an agitator

Lastly Creme IT or similar tank liner plus a real paper element fuel filter

I fixed it. I put a new 2.7 gal. Clarke tank on it. This will gain me more ride time without having to carry any gas cans. I still plan on cleaning the OE tank, maybe for a backup or somthing. Thanks again for all the info. I will put it to use.

Thanks,

Ken
