Has anybody ever ridden their TW on this road....my buddy Rick and I did the road, by mistake in a Ford 150 back some 34 years ago in August 1980....and I know Big Dog has posted photos of his ride there a few years back....I plan on, if God is willing, making that ride before I pack it in, on the TW....if you have never seen it, here is a Video of the trip:

We ended up in a Bar in Cripple Creek, camped along the stream outside of town, and panned for Gold for 3 days...having a bit of luck, but not enough to pay for the beer we drank:icon_shaking2:

That looks like a lot of fun. Hoot, you should definitely go, looks perfect for you and your bike. Get Borneo to go with you, he has a trailer.
With gold over $1200 per once you might pay for beer this time. On a moonlit night you could see any oncoming traffic lights and safely hug the inside line away from nasty drop-off.
Gorgeous, thanks for the video.

Enjoyed the video, and when it was done watched the one about the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. Looks like an interesting area with a lot of mining history. I would like to do that ride one day, too, then ride the train when I'm done! Thanks for sharing with us.

When we were there in 1980 it was basically a Ghost Town with a couple of bars and some Old Hippies....now the Condo~Commando types have built up around it, but I think there is still plenty to see and plenty of wide open spaces....and the Shelf Road is not likely to change anytime soon, the logistics just won't allow for it.....I will indeed be back, if I'm still kicking and able.;)

Hell, when I was there in 1969, it WAS a ghost town! With a few Young Hippies, me included.

I rode that shelf road after coming up from Colorado Springs on the Gold Camp road on a Yamaha 160 Enduro in 1970, and managed somehow to find some gas and two-stroke oil in Canyon City to complete the loop. (Or did the Enduro have an oil mixer?..... I don't remember.) There is a lot of stuff from the 1970's I can't remember.;)

But now, Cripple Creek has a HUGE open pit mine where all the hills East of town used to be, and it is nothing but casinos and B&B's....Bleh! Victor, however, has retained all its old Gold Camp charm and looked almost the same two years ago as in 1970....or 1920, for that matter. Lots of good riding still to be found nearby, like the back way to Guffey, 11 mile, or Florissant. Notice there were NO motorhomes in that video and you won't find them on any of those back roads either! Hwy 24, on the other hand, is almost a parking lot now in the summer.

Lots of good memories from College days.....I think......like I said it was the '70's:p

I'd recommend doing a loop- there is good parking just off Hwy 50 outside Canon City where the Phantom Canyon road starts. Phantom Canyon up, over through Victor and Cripple Creek, down Shelf Road and back to your vehicle. Here's some pics from a couple years ago- sorry I no longer have a TW ( actually I don't have the KLX either ) but was just 'passing through' this forum as I kind of have the bug for something small and funky again... :)

Heading up Phantom Canyon...

Victor...

Sign in Cripple Creek...

Heading down Shelf Road...

After Shelf, on the way to Canon City, road soon turns to twisty country pavement after this area...

I actually enjoyed Phantom more for whatever reason. Cripple Creek really surprised me- I felt reports of it's commercialization were greatly exaggerated. The casinos don't seem to extend past the main drag and there are lots of unrestored buildings downtown on the side streets. What a 'vertical' town CC is! I told my daughter if anybody ever tried to talk her into doing a 10k there to tell them "heck no!"

FWIW any DS bike will have no trouble on either road. Highly recommended!

Good Stuff....even for a "former" tw owner :p

I am now sure I have that route on my Bucket List....I was somewhat young(31) and for sure dumb{working in radio and switching from News Director at Dodge City to returning to Ohio as Program Director} in 1980....have not been back to that location since, and I have always regretted not taking the Jeep up that way when returning from RV Delivery Runs out west....sometimes life, working a "real job" for the State and County Health Departments, Kids, and making a living gets in your way....now that I have the time and a few bucks, I plan on making the most of my time between officiating gigs, grandkids, and waiting for the wife to retire all together from teaching{she is retired but still working at least part time teaching}.....

You never know how much time you have, and I don't plan on dying on the recliner watching Televised BS if I can help it....:icon_shaking2:

thanks

All the plans I have made and very few have been completed...........and time is going so fast.

Back to the video -- it looks like a great area to explore. Not sure about the YouTube stabilization program......it kind of sucks.

Ten days out of each year, Hoot, that's all you really need for this kind of adventure! Even from Ohio!
Look at Small's..... If he can do it, so can you! Just don't let anything get in your way and let the chips fall....etc.

Easy for me to say, being retired, but my home is just like a spider web too, and if I don't just say "BYE-BYE!" once in a while, I will get stuck behind endless Honeydews or Ioughttadews.

Been somewhat "retired" since 2002{Left my Environmental Health Director Positon} Rocky...at the age of 53, but 5 years seeing the country{and Canada} delivering RVs, plus officiating 200+ High School and College Baseball, football, and basketball game per year...make it not so retired{enjoying the Hell out of what I do}.....but the time is at hand....I have the time{if I choose} and enough spare change{not much, but enough}, I just need to get some of the dumbass buddies of mine to buy in...for some reason they think they need to "save" all their money, work until they die, so their Kids can have what they earned, working their entire lives for....thank Gawd my kids and wife have earned their own way through life, and really don't expect me to leave then anymore than the life insurance bucks I have socked away....I am ready to drag the wife and anybody willing to follow along in my "Bucket List" Adventures....

Hoot, or anyone else for that matter, I have two TW200's sitting the the barn screaming "ride me". They are available to who ever on the forum would like to drive in, fly in, walkin?, your choice, and ride them in some of Californias finest country. If the timing is right, which I should be able to make, I would go with you.

Hoot. Who knows, maybe we could get and "old mans" ralley going with GaryL, r80rt, Fred, rmartin, rurindum, and any other grey hairs that would like to join us. Could be a lot of fun. Motel 6 doesn't rent tents, but I understand they have rooms.

Sounds interesting! Especially since your riding season is 365 days a year! Can I camp in your barn? But maybe I'm not old enough......:p

I'm due for a Death Valley trip this winter, it's been three years.:D SBP is only another 365 miles.

If any of your buddies are unfortunate enough to go into long term care the kids won't see a dime anyway- it'll all go to the nursing home.

At 6k/mo for even a mediocre one it doesn't last long...

Ain't that a cheerful thought!

Perfect example why to spend it and die broke....once you are out of bucks the Medicare/Medicade take over anyway....or if you are like my 91 year old father-in-law, his wfe gets to keep the house, car, etc, and he gets put in a good place, where he can bitch to heart's content....

Some states have 'spousal impoverishment' laws which make it possible for the spouse to stay in their home and live a typical senior lifestyle. The state approval for my mom to pay a greatly reduced rate for my dad (1k vs 6k) came in the mail 6 months after filing the paperwork, 1 week after her death. Now he's back to paying full retail...

You just never know.

Ride when you can!

Just to follow up on my offer to anyone. I have room for camping. I have a 5th wheel trailer and a motorhome. If that doesn't work, there is Morro Bay State park 9 miles, a county park 6 miles, or a 160 acre ranch at 5 miles away. I would love to hustle up grub for a BBQ or a good fresh salmon dinner. I can handle the meals, just asked the people who made the Russ Austin Memorial Ride at Santa Margarita last June. Come on Hoot, get it on the calender!!!
