Well, another smoking Xr. It's a 1983 XL600r and yep, like any Xr would... It's now smoking! Sometimes it only does it when the bike is first started. But today while following I noticed a huge cloud of white smoke pouring out of that beast when it was revved up (going through a tunnel). I know we are mostly yamahaulers here but anyone ride red? I'm guessing rings... And on the side of the top end there is a key hole looking thing that leaks oil. I think can tensioner? I can't really remember. It needs an O-ring but that seems that it would be pretty hard to replace in that location.

That XL600R is one of my favorite motorcycles, big bore 2 carbs what is not to love. The '83 is great looking in red, I almost had a nice '87, the red white and blue, and the guy sold it before I got there. I will own that bike one day. But back to your question....When first started is usually valves. That is the oil in the head that leaks down after you turn it off. What concerns me is that it is white smoke, that is usually water, blue smoke is oil. If there is no chance that rain water is going in your exhaust, I would start by checking the compression, should be 175, then check the valve clearances. I will bet it is valve seals. If you want to check if the valves are leaking down, just remove the head from the cylinder. Fill the area around the valves with WD-40 and put it on a clean piece of paper towel, you will see the WD on the paper if they are not sealing. Keep in mind that this information comes to you from a half assed backyard mechanic. There is a very good thread with some great mechanics on ADV rider. Go to Thumpers, then look for XL600. Also you call it an XR twice and an XL once, whichever it is there is a lot of good info on that site. Post more info, I would like to see the bike.

It is a XL, I was saying XR because the engine is basically or maybe even is the same. I will check into it soon as I can get to it. Honestly, I'm not sure what color it was. It may have had blue but from where i sat I couldn't tell you. It's been garage kept and not water should be in there. I'll post pics soon.

You're killing me!!! Mine was a red 1974 CR125 Elsinore but I like the silver better. I found a girl that will part with an MT250 Elsinore for a good price, but after bringing the KTM home there is a girl in this house looking to part with ME!

Ride red? Huh? They weren't red when I rode them.

And before you ask, no, that isn't mine...but I wish it was.

If it is an '83 it was originally red with a black engine. '86 Red white and blue silver rims, '87 Red white and blue gold rims.
