We had some talk of starting a thread on Snowbirding the Slabcity and Quartsite areas while sitting around the campfire in Moab. As there is riding for miles around that area and is great for the winter time blues, Would be nice for some of us to get together for a week, month, or a winter campout. I would like to hang out for a while so come and goes would be great.

I am getting so tired of the dampness and rain here I am reeeeeeeeeeeeeeealy ready for some warmer climate from Oct-May. Anyone interested?

Snowbird is a term usually reserved for us Noreasters heading to Florida here. I can't say I blame anyone from the northern reaches for heading south in the winters. The key there is to find the right weather and the right types of riding areas. What little I know of Florida riding would not cause me to drag my TW from NY to there. To be honest, if I was free as a bird to go where ever I want to go in the winter from NY I have no idea where that place would be. I don't like sand or obsessive heat or humidity at all. I do like mountains over flat terrain. Right here where I live in NY would be perfect if the average temps year round would be close to 60.

If you come down here.Leave the Dub at home and bring your golf cart.
Already did that! Moved to Inverness, Fl back in 2002 and even the golf was not that good. We stayed from April through November and found out just why most folks from here go to Florida from November until April. Could not stand the heat and wife is deadly allergic to fire ants and bees.

Growing up in South Florida, Venice, back in the 1950s and early 60s, it was a different world... these days it's nothing but crazy bastards, druggies, child molesting types, "Blue Hairs", illegals, most who don't know a Gawd Damn word of English....youngest sister still lives in Naples, but frankly the entire damn mess is to hot and humid...sure I visit there, and you can escape to the Everglades to ride around away from most traffic and people, but it is no place you would want to spend 12 months, or even and entire winter there....

I'm thinking Southern Colorado, South Texas, or perhaps a Vegas Casino for 4 months of winter :D

The last time we were on Merritt Island, I had so many noseeum bites on my legs, it looked like I got blasted with a shotgun shell full of salt.

And yes, I know what that really looks/feels like.

We are currently looking for another house in Loxahatchee. Something with a huge barn that I can air condition and live the rest of my life as a grouchy curmudgeon.
Wait a minute!
I can do that here in NY!
Money saved!
I can buy more bikes!!!

Wife almost croaked. Standing by the yard fence in Florida talking with the neighbor, right on a fire ant nest. 3 days in the hospital and almost a month to heal. Went to Maine a few years back and this time it was black flies. She can't go anywhere without a good supply of Epi-pens on hand. I have to search and find any yellow jacket nests around the yard and dispatch of them the minute I locate them. She says she would move to Alaska to get away from bugs but has no clue the bugs up there are ten times worse and bigger.

Not all snowbirds go to Florida.
In western Canada most will head to California or Arizona.
I believe Randal is looking to stay on the west coast and head south from the conversation around the campfire.

Yes, we were talking Arizona-California area. Looks like you have to haul water, but the living is free to park. Also 180 dollars will get you 6mo of free camping on BLM land anywhere you care to light. Putting a TW camp together to me would be great fun.

I checked out a water tank to have plenty. Figure a 150 gal tank is an easy fill and last a couple weeks. Will have to go for groceries and dump the trailer a couple times a month so that should cut the travel down.

Quartzite can be tolerated and even easy if you can tolerate other people. There are places where the septic truck will come around an pump your tanks and another truck will bring you water. I think of the rock swap in Desert Gardens and the related tent events in January. It can be a rustic or as civilized as you want it to be. Keep us posted of your plans for next year. Tom

Hope to join you late Dec or early Jan. Have some doctoring to do until Dec. Let us know where you settle down. Looking forward to doing some desert rides with those who join us.

Snowbirds. What a trip. It's quite the experience if you've never seen it. Entire cities spring up in the desert filled with folks from cold country tired of being miserable. Pretty wide open scene and all amenities available or not depending. Been happening for eons. I wasn't aware that folks in the East went to Florida. Florida is like the East Coast, full of bugs, bad weather and unhappy people. Not. Much of an escape in my book. Way back even such as President Roosevelt would winter in the SW. The scene around Quartsite is crazy. Have an associate who makes good money doing minor repairs on RVs. I think one of the highlights is the annual Pyrotechnic festival. Think hundreds of Pyros legally shooting off fireworks.
I have often dreamed of a permanent site out that way with a barn of TWs for rent. Like Morrison said "The West is the Best, get out here and we'll do the rest" . Be smart, stay active in Winter rather than molding away in snow and rain.

It looks like there are a few people on here that are around Quartzsite.
I'll be down there all of January and February and (possibly the first part of November)
I'm new on this site. Have been riding my tw down there since last year.
One of the reasons I joined is to Hopefully hook up with more riders (so many people now ride side by sides)

I'll be at the cheaprvliving RTR for 2 weeks in Jan. There was another TW rider there this past Jan. He isn't/wasn't on here.
I didn't get too many places down there this year as I had places I needed to be.
:) still have a few places I have to go...
