I saw another thread about finical aid to students.
Here's one I know.
Divorce working mother of 2 girls. Oldest ages out of forced visitation with dad. Youngest 15 with a boyfriend, dad leaves together for a evening. Yep 15 and pregnant. Both girls honor role in high school. Oldest started collage courses in high school. All on scholarships, 15 year old had already qualified for a few. Has child a son, at 16, still in school on collage prep and working part time. We noticed the baby was tongue tied and had a red spot in the white of his eye. WIC(?) Dr say they no longer recommend clipping. Eye is just the way he is. Poor kid couldn't lick and ice cream cone. At 18 they move for collage. Married the dad of baby. Didn't last, dad is living out of that suitcase instead of closing it.( it's my own metaphor) Full tuition is covered for school ! All on scholarships.
Son has a pre- school physical- hey this kid is tongue tied. That needs to be taking care of he can not talk. So he gets his tongue clipped. Speech therapy for 5 years. In school it's required that eye test be performed. Eye examiner says-he has a spot in his eye. So he is sent to U of M he has a tumor that is behind his eye and will make him lose his eye sight if they can't clip it off the optic nerve. He has eye surgery they couldn't remove all of tumor. Dr are hopeful that they removed enough that his vision will be saved. And "kill" tumor. It will be monitored for the rest of his life.
He didn't have these operations when he was a baby because the system looked at the statistics. 15 year old unwed mother. They wrote them off.
Guess what Mom has graduated collage. With 2 degrees, got her career job. Is high up in banking, I'm not sure her current title. But about 75,000+ a year, and many bonuses.
I wrote this because she posted an update about her [email protected]
He just out scored everyone in his district ( by age/ grade) by over 20- Im not sure if that's % or points. But she was called in to school and told. That since he was such a high academic achiever the state will track him. When he gets to junior high and high school. Making sure that he has the program's needed for him to excel.
So be careful who you write off. That 16 year old mother and baby just might change our world.

Or the kid could be the next up and coming serial killer. No matter what they wound up with for parents some people will wrench every ounce out of life that they can. Humans are capable of far more than they achieve. Us included.

Really that's what you got out of that.
That's the exact mentality of the health care providers that didn't give him the care they would have had he had a 30's 2-parent family.
We judge people. Looks income, what ever. That's not for us do decide.

Well, here is the thing Padilen. I'm unsure how what you described happened since the doctors would get paid through medicaid, which any way you slice it is a gift from those of us who work and pay taxes. Plus, really, when you think about it, a lot of care has been provided, I'm assuming the therapy too. Most likely that care, if I understand the time-frame you described, was also free.

I guess, I really don't get the point of the story. The "government" doesn't really have any money of it's own. In fact it siphons and leeches off more than you can imagine. The money comes from people who get up, get dressed and go to work.

I hope you are right and he does change the world for the better. Doesn't always work that way. Top graduate of my law school class became an alcoholic, suffered health problems because of that, and now lives on disability. Waste of talent. And a sad story.

I'd rather do my drinking and BSing down in the bar room and leave the upstairs for the real TW discussions. We get in enough trouble all on our own.:D

Thanks RBM.

So, now to the OPs discussion.

There is plenty of blame to go around to all concerned, mom, doctors, health insurance decides and lots of others. None should go to the child and he should get every last bit of free money he deserves. I would much prefer an achiever gets my tax dollars than a slug.

Not to take from your story but here is one I know. Growing up my next door neighbor classmates were twins, boy and girl and he was my best friend back then. Both had really messed up crooked teeth and the family had very little money just like mine. They decided it was more important the girls teeth got braces. I guess I could understand that mind set. In our senior year she had the braces removed and a very pretty smile and jimmy still had teeth going in 4 different directions. Back in the early 1960s there just was no government subsidies to help poor families get the children's teeth fixed.

We moved away, I went in the navy, jimmy and his sister both went to college. Fast forward 15 years. I run in to Jimmy and he is doing great. Still a messed up mouth but he is a construction supervisor for a big company and making well over 6 figures with nice home real nice wife and two children, both have braces. He mentioned that Joan hit some hard times and just got out of rehab for drugs. We got together for a family gathering at his place and Joan was there. Her pretty smile was shot from cocain abuse and her pretty teeth were half rotted. Her college degree was in Criminal Justice but she got fired because of felony drug possession and can't get a job in that field these days. She tends bar at a local dive and has a daughter from a previous marriage and husband has full custody out of state.

No one ever said life is fair but you have to play the hand you were dealt. How you do play it is up to you, I have two nephews age 36 and 40 now. Both had the exact same upbringing. One is a deputy warden in the fed prison system and the other buffs cars at a body shop for a little over minimum wage.

I'm sorry.
I thought I had it in right section. Thanks for pointing it out and getting it moved. I use tap talk and crappy cell.
No, they had private insurance. But the collage was all paid by grants and scholarships. I though the other thread was about paying for collage. WIC(?) was involved "at risk", because of teen mom.
In my area the professionals
wrote them off just some more that would fail to prosper. Moving for collage meant different Dr. One's that didn't write off a teen mom and son. No scholarships and grants = no collage.
She took advantage of the programs, and prospered. As did her son because of the move. That's what the scholarships and grants are for. To better one's self.
The Judge Judy showed the bad. Nobody wants a success video, nobody would view it. It wouldn't be entertaining, we couldn't be judgmental. We couldn't whine and say out tax dollars were wasted.
Edit I don't type those spaces either !

There was one year that I took the national debt, divided by the number of US citizens, (it was tax time) I looked at what I had just paid for the year prior and realized I had paid my fair share. Now we complain about tax dollars being wasted that will be our grandchildren's burden.

I truly don't know the total number of sisters, brothers, half sisters, half brothers, step sisters, step brothers, foster sisters, and foster brothers that I've had. The two sisters closest to me in age both had kids at 15. My youngest sister is over 21 years younger than I. One of my step brothers has been 1 college credit shy of his masters degree for over thirty years while he has been dwelling in the alleys of Indianapolis. One step brother didn't graduate high school but did sell enough drugs to pay all of his mothers cancer bills, payed off her house and put two siblings through college. There was no child support or government checks issued to them. I was over seas in the service when I got a letter from my mom telling me she was sorry for not raising me. My dad left when I was 5 and never paid child support. When the government doesn't pass out some free aid, service, or cash; I don't give it a second thought. If I had a child that needed medical help, I'd figure out a way to make that happen. I've spent my life not being my parents. My senior year I had an apartment, a full time job, and graduated night school. My son learned to read sitting on my lap before he was 2. By third grade his reading level tested at the 11th grade level. I have never had a television for him to watch. I did however make sure the library in the house had full shelves. We need to change our world instead of letting our world shape us.

The child and his mom will probably not make a difference in this world. Hopefully they won't hurt it either. Yep, that's what I get out of it.

2,100,000,000 / 350,000,000. So, what are you going to do with your $6?

Here're some anecdotal stories for you:

My daughter, well above average IQ, no significant learning disabilities, earned the 2 highest awards in Girl Scouts before she was 15, top 5% GPA in high school, choice of extra-curricular scholarships, had more than enough scholarships lined up to cover 100% at state universities, and is today a barely employable drug addict who owes $70k in school loans, has about a 12 credit rating, and has ruined so many innocent people's lives with her drug-induced dysfunctions I refuse to be in the same building with her.

My son has multiple learning disabilities, stayed in trouble with every conceivable authority prick from kinder teacher through state courts, yet today is debt free and his work is featured on the covers and centerfolds of premiere national publications in his field, with no government "investment".

The difference in outcome is my daughter chose to hang with trailer trash, and my son chose to hang with people who challenged themselves and chared support with others in overcoming challenges. Nothing more, nothing less.

So, Padilen, have your $75,000/year wonder mom and wonder boy paid back all the government has "invested" in them, with interest? If not, they are still bums. I'm about sick of all these anecdotes about nobodies making it big with government assistance. Friggen 1%ers is what they are. My experience teaching kinder through university levels is that the VAST majority the government blows $$$$ on turn out corrupt. It's stupid to look at a specific case and ignore the 99%. For every nobody who became somebody with government "investment" seems like there are 99 who misspent their "investments" and are still bums, and always will be.

So much for socialism, the world's most dysfunctional religion.
