Yup, you could trip walking at 3 mph and kill yourself theoretically, just gotta fail to catch yourself and hit the pavement the right way with full force. Multiply that by 5 just doing 15 mph in a parking lot....

Please do think about it everybody, qaudruply so if you have a nice girlfriend/wife and/or family that really really cares for you. Why let yourself die on what should be just a little "bump on the head" and maybe a scratch or two with the right gear?

I pass out helmets to kids for skateboarding and bike riding - I'm a bicycle safety instructor for the American Bicycle League. The DOT and other groups buy them and we typically give away and fit (and teach parents to secure) helmets to 100 - 125 kids per session. Its real rewarding knowing that you might keep 1 or 10 or ? from a serious injury, paralysis, or ?. I occasionally cheat and give helmets to adults (they are for the youth), knowing that if mom has on a helmet, the kids are more likely to use them too. I won't ride my pedal bike or my MC without head protection. I felt strongly enough about it that when got interested in potentially buying a bike, I happened upon an old (real old) Bell at a yard sale for $5. I wore it on the ride home with the TW I bought a week later, and for a few more times before selecting a full face helmet. I felt like I got my $5 worth in the confidence it gave me on my new bike and 40 mile ride to home. Ride safely, Tom

You don't want to wear a helmet? Fine. Then let me do this little test with you. I'll smack you over the head with rolled up news paper. First with a helmet then without. Next tell me what hit hurt more. No joke I used this several times to prove a point.

I don't believe in helmet laws, but I do believe in helmets. So much so that I have not ridden my new, old 2001 I just purchased because I am waiting for a helmet ordered on the Internet to arrive. I gave my battered Shoei to the man who bought my last sled so he could ride it back to Austin.

An acquaintance of mine in Houston was going to ride two miles to a friend's house for a swim in his pool. Had a T-shirt, swim trunks and flip-flops. Then grabbed his helmet at the last moment. Woke up in a ditch on the far side of a four-lane. He had totaled his Hyabusa, totaled a Honda Civic (the usual "I didn't see him." left turner) and totaled his full-face helmet. Only broke his jaw, cracked some ribs and banged up his knees and elbows.

On another dual sport forum, they use the expression ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time). I subscribe to that.

I know a lady that very nearly died, and has permament memory loss, from falling in a parking lot while walking (she rides, and always wears a helmet btw). I know of two guys over the years that died in bar fights by falling and hitting their heads. Our human flesh is fragile. When it comes to safety first, a helmet is an good idea and ATGATT is an even better idea.

On the bicycle side, I had a buddy in '85 that was killed while riding a bike. Had he been wearing a helmet he may have survived as it was the head injury that killed him. Helmets for bicycles -- also a good idea.

Helmets are for losers. I heard a guy fell off his parked motorcycle with his helmet on, the helmet caught on the footpeg of the motorcycle parked next to his, and broke his neck. Everyone knows helmets will break your neck, so never wear one.

People fall in the shower and die from head injuries. 0 MPH.

There is always anecdotal evidence to support just about any argument.

I remember being annoyed when the helmet law came but now I don't think twice about it and nice for keeping ur head warm in winter, no sunburn on my head/ears, deflecting bugs with the face shield and all it takes is smacking ur head on something and ur done. The only time I don't wear one is with dogs on back of quad in the local creek where I'm going about 5 mph but still keep helmet bungeed on front rack in case the creek police are around....lol. They will ticket u for no helmet/green sticker and even heard they gave a ticket for reckless driving...reckless driving a quad in gravel/sand in the creek??? Ur supposed to drive reckless in the creek....LOL

I watched a guy on a Street Glide wearing a typical unlined fibre glass shell novelty helmet fall off his bike while stopped. He fell backwards, head back, and the unfinished edge of his helmet cut him across the back of the neck from ear to ear. He almost bled to death in the parking lot and ended up getting 35 stitches. He would have been much better off without the salad bowl he was wearing.

I know some people don't want to wear helmets, but if you are going to put one on, why even bother with a novelty one instead of the real deal?

I always challenge people to a simple test when this argument comes up:

Put your hands behind your back, lean forward till you start falling and leave your hands behind your back. When your face hits the floor, it will be going about 5 MPH.

"that would be crazy"...

Point made.

I was called a wimp by the other tougher kids for wearing a helmet. Now I'm an older wiser man. Some of those tough kids never got the chance to become older or wiser. Thank's Mom and Dad for making sure I had a lid on before being allowed on the bike!

If you choose to not wear a helmet, at least register as an organ donor so you won't be a complete waste.

+1, My sentiments, exactly.

I propose this approach: Insurance companies should NOT pay medical costs if the biker is involved in an accident and is not wearing a helmet. That allows each biker to decide to wear or not wear a helmet, and the rest of us don't pay for his decision.

I like this, too.

^ I'm with you as long as the non-helmet users don't end up on my taxes as "indigent care" or encourage my kids to take unnecessary risks by their example.

Oh, another example for "anecdotal evidence." My kid has brain damage from landing on his head during a dirt bike wreck. Had he not been wearing a helmet I suspect he'd be dead or be a vegetable.

Yeah, but they have these out now -- helps prevent c-spine injuries:
