Took what was to be a quick test ride to check on some controlled burns in my local Dog Valley. Had so much fun somehow 3 hours slipped by.
Numerous snow flattened brush and residual snow banks stopped easy passage in places.
I've recently taken a lesson from Admiral's good ethics and no longer make go-arounds of the main trail. While I could tread lightly around this brush and snow but then other follow on riders might tear things up.

So I just take alternate routes instead.

Punched through some rotten snow, often being the first vehicle of the season.

Not always making it though.

Turned around and took another fork only to come around corner and see a tipped over very heavily loaded BMW GS looking for all the world like a silver and black water buffalo wallowing in the mud. Of course I stopped and helped rider lift that heavy beast back up and showed him a safer way back out to better roads.

Snow tended to be rotten and hollow underneath old wheel tracks from meltwater run-off. Easy but soggy riding.

Sometimes got a bit deep. Scouted this one and while I could have crossed over tip of downed aspen there was a deep drop off on other side before the rocky climb-out. Coward that I am I saved that one for another day.

Instead road more of these twin tracks that at times were more like one single track next to one steep creek.
Note my fancy new turn signal/horn/headlight switchgroup. Worked great, tested horn on some firemen dragging water lines through controlled burn policing up hot spots. Beep-beep, coming through.

Nice meadows are finally getting some wildflowers.

The firemen had done a good job with their controlled burns right up to road margins. (y)

'twas another easy fun ride just enjoying being back in the saddle again. Repaired start/stop switch group on other side of handlebars worked flawlessly with me, bike, and terrain all happily interacting. A good ride.

Did come across some new gates and road closures. This sign was a first, may indicate year round closure to mountain peak and fire tower that is usual destination when riding with guests.

Extended ride to a pair of lakes filling up with snowmelt. Stampede here. When riding here with the Admirals a few years ago during a drought we rode on the dry grassy lakebed. That was until Lori found and “disturbed” a snake. Much nicer when water levels are a good 40 feet higher

Boca here was closer to full pool.

I don't do mud very well but I sure would have liked your ride. Its been a long time since I even started my TW's. I am afraid I will need to clean the carbs.

Very nice ride report. That sign sucked! It is just an indication of what is to come.

I would not be brave enough to ride even those smooth old railroad grades solo on a 600 lb bike plus likely another hundred pounds of loaded fancy aluminum panniers plus gear bags plus extra fuel all told costing north of $24,000 .
We unloaded as much as reasonable while chatting about TWs and my clown bike's rear tire as he sipped an energy drink. Then we backed up to the bike, bent to the task and hand and heaved upwards using mostly leg muscles. Once up nothing seemed damaged, quality kit . Engine fired right up initially puffing a bit of smoke from oil congestion during it's dirt nap. I offered to ride with him showing a BMW friendly 30 mile plus graded dirt loop back to town but he was done in, just wanted back out to pavement. Nice guy, well worth stopping to assist since I had always been curious about what it takes to right one of those water buffalos. Turns out he was on a shake-down test ride before heading to Calgary.
Since so many have helped me in past I was happy to pay it forward. We never know what balance is in our karmic bank account so good to make a good will deposit now and then.

That is Jerry's old Mr.Gizmo TW somewhat re-envisioned. Love the plush long travel suspension and big gas tank, the other oddities I can live with.
Decal is from the adult cartoon Futurama. Is their diaper wearing milenia old alien pet named NIBBLER who eats absolutely everything. With a teenage son I would have thought FUTURAMA would be playing frequently in your home. Or don't you let him watch adult cartoons knowing they will rot his brain?

i've seen the name, nibbler, on your byline and not known the reference... my son finds plenty to rot his brain, he's my smarter than i. we don't limit his content as much as quantity.

he is one of the only in his class that doesn't have a cell yet. friday's he can take his numberless, hand-me-down "old phone" to play pokeman go. before i liked it, as it had him using and reading maps, now it seems more mind rot.

makes me sound old.

Both points well taken...I hate Mud, but not as much as Sand, and {not to get political, insert eye roll}, that Sign sucks and is what "They" want to do to our {not their} land...keep us off of it...

elime, think you would have enjoyed the ride. I would have enjoyed sharing it with you, been too many years since we rode together with the likes of Joemama , Joeband and the other NorCal Nuts.
Wasn't really muddy except where the fire trucks had churned up roads in the controlled burn are. By and large there were easy smooth abandoned rail road grades to enjoy with just enough snow or wet sections to rinse any mud off. Bike and I came hope pretty clean.

I think the LED turn signal strips I inlet into my handguards are nice but could be brighter. Few times I'm on public roads I want traffic to see me and be aware of my intentions. Last time I went through an intersection a truck wishing to turn across my path saw me only at last minute and braked enough for me to slip by.

Wildlife road closures are normally temporary and are nearly universal in Eastern Washington on public land that is critical winter range.....

Thanks for the pics.....I do not like green eggs and ham or riding in snow....
