I just bought a 1987 tw200. It has only 4100 miles on it. Didnt come with a battery. I put a new one in,but caused a spark to frame while doing so. Electric starter does nothing, but kick starts right up. Dash blinker indicator works, but not neutral or headlight dash indicator. Did I pop a fuse when I caused the spark?

Probably, it's easy to check under the right side cover. If you're lucky there will still be a good spare fuse in the holder there. Another possibility - does the headlight come on? I've noticed the detents on my key switch are getting a little loose, and occasionally I have to turn the key slightly counter-clockwise to make contact and cause the turn signals, headlight and starter to energize. Even when the signals. headlight, and starter aren't working the TW still kick starts and runs fine.

'87's have a seperate lighting coil. The headlight only comes on when the engine is running and there are no front running lights.



On your bike the tail light should be lit with the key on. If your turn signals work you've got power. So odds are your dash bulbs are just burned out.



Several things can keep the starter out of the circuit. The quick and dirty way to tell whether it's the control circuit or the starter circuit is to jump the two big terminals on the solenoid. If the starter spins your problem is in the solenoid, safety switches or the wiring.

Thank you. Your exactly right. I did jump the solenoid and the starter works fine. I've been getting used to riding a motor cycle again rather than investigating further. I'll save that for the long winter. I have gotten all but the brake light working. I have been riding off road on private property.
