Hello: I have a 1994 with a bad stator. Is the stator used for anything besides charging the battery? In other words, if I can lve without the electric start, do I have to replace the $300+ stator? The bike is worth about $1200. I hate to spend 1/3 the value on a stator.

The stator is an alternator that has the magnets rotating around stationary pieces, instead of as in a car or truck.

The "pieces" are the charging system for the battery, and more importantly, another set for the ignition.

I have read on the Forum of taking off the starter, battery, and adding a sink of sorts so as not to damage the

charging system.(Start it with your hind leg.) I have to run off to work; hate to be so terse, but stators can be rewound

for much less. I have one waiting on it and I am afraid my '89 is insisting on it, and this is after only a 1000 miles

on a new one. Have you done the resistance checks? Is the battery chargeable? Any pinched wires? Read Sloppy's post

from the other day-- that's us, and I am not charging since. Someone better will be along shortly.
