I found this link on rewinding stators, its for a KTM but I would think the basics would be the same for any stator, I have not done this myself (since I have a kickstart) but I might actually attempt it this spring if I get really bored, but then again I don't think I can ever get that bored.

I have no idea if what the size of the wires are for the TW, but could you use a larger diameter wire so that way you would not have to wind so much? Just a thought.

The former wisdom here was that resistance was really the most important issue. The stator wire for the nine charging units is 1mm.

This is .03937 inches; 18 gauge is .04030 and has a resistance in copper of 6.374 ohms per 1000 ft. I can't speak for magnet wire.

This is from a 89 or 90 bike.

The 2 large magnets for ignition are made of fine braided wire and perhaps smaller diameter, more like .8mm. I could not get a good

micrometer reading because it was flattened from stretching. The outside is several layers of fine cord. But it is braided to maximize

the current.

There had been some discussion of this in the Old Forum. There are others who have been there. Good luck and tell us how it went if you do.

I posted this link in the "Conversion to TTR125 Ignition" thread, but it is just as useful or more, here.

"Stators Demystified" written by an electrical engineer. This combined with a few of the DIY rewinding articles for other bikes should tell you all that you need to know to get the job done.

I will probably be undertaking this next winter, if not sooner. Really want some more output on the bike but have to be careful how you do it, as you will see from the above article. It is all a "finely tuned" system and if you don't pay attention to this you will end up with less than desirable results.
