97 TW: Picked this up from a barn. I was told that the bike was used to teach a young rider on. Rider grew up and returned the bike with an oil leak from the side cover. The oil leak was repaired and once put back together it would not run (another pinched wire). I bought the bike and the picture shows what I found. The more tape I removed the more I found. I removed what little factory covering that was left. Even the wire from the lower case (not pictured) had several open bare wire spots. I’m new to all this so expect some real dumb questions
Picture item #1 is this the normal color or is the wiring damaged?
#2 Due to all the open spots in the wire cover and three solder joints is it best to
Make a new harness or tape and cover

Fred,,,,you did send the manual link and I have it on my computer.. I think we have narrowed it down to the coil or cdi.. I should have a coil in by Friday.
So we will see.. If it is the CDI I will really consider changing to a newer stator system. I have a friend that had a 87 I will try his CDI first and go from there.
As soon as I know something Ill post and let you know about any parts. Thank you sir very much

this might be covered some where but I have found anything.. While working on getting this 87 I noticed that the side casing part of the the stator where the wires are routed thru is dry but has oil soaked dirt stuck in it. Since the wires getting pinched or damaged in the chain area has anyone tried modified the case to allow the wiring bundle to exit with out passing the chain? see picture
Its not hard and can be sealed to protect. Was going to replace/ fix the wires like Mistervelosity has.

Thanks for the reply,,, as you can tell I not the sharpest knife in the drawer on electrical stuff,,,
After reading a bunch of stuff on here and in the service manual Im getting a bunch of names for the same thing so please straighten me out. (see picture below please name 1, 2, 3)

Ref: test resistance to cover: Xtobi aske ne too do the checks
since the wires have a thick protective cover them inside the housing I can not determine which goes where without going thru the covering.

If anyone would please tell me which wire goes to what it would help a lot there is a three wire connector, two wire connector and two single wires the wiring for #3 is easy to follow

I know that for a lot of people that is experienced with this stuff they are having a good laugh but for me and just maybe a couple others it really new stuff.
Thanks again to all for any and all help. Respectfully

I think Im starting to understand kohm vs ohm sorry for empty brain
#1 pulser coil: kohm .833 ohm 833
#2 sourse coil: kohm.4 ohm 400
#3 charging coil: red to red: 315 ohms ( is that the correct wires to check?

Are you wanting me to see if any or all wires from 1,2,3 have continuity to the cover?

Thanks for your help and putting up with my lack of knowledge
