Hello. I am planning to have my tank sandblasted and need some advice. I saw this helpful thread below detailing how to remove a TW tank:



"Piece of cake. All you need is a 10mm socket. Remove seat by removing two bolts under it, cut off gas from tank, remove gas hose from tank petcock, remove bolt from base of tank and slide tank backwards....... done."



This is good advice, but before I dig in, I have a few questions:

1. Should I drain the tank first? If so, is the best way just to start the bike and let it run out?

2. "Cut off gas from tank" ... Does this mean anything more than turning the petcock to the off position?

3. "Remove gas hose from tank petcock" ... How is this attached? Will I need a special part to reattach?

It's really easy....no need to over-think it


You don't have to drain the tank. It wobbles with the sloshing gas once it's off- no big deal.

Petcock off will stop the fuel flow.

The gas line goes on a "barbed" fitting on the petcock. Sometimes there is a small clamp- self explanatory really. Once the clamp is off, you may have to gently rotate the hose before you slide it off- again no big deal.

You mention sandblasting, while it might mean actually sand, I'd be careful. Glass bead blast or the new "soda blast" or walnut shells etc. will be less traumatic to the thin steel of the tank. I'd also give it a real good interior clean when your done- 1/4 full of kerosene and a good shaking would probably do it.

BTW, If your gas leaks after you disconnect the hose, I'd rebuild or replace the petcock. This operation is when many of us find we have a bad petcock and have avoided problems only by religiously shuting off the petcock upon dismount. Oh,,, you don't turn off the petcock, then you are one of the luck ones that has not had a bad petcock seal (Yet). Cheers, and yes you are on the right track. Don't sweat the small stuff. Tom

I don't disagree with anything Omegaman said, but I will offer this step by step.



1. Set the fuel petcock to "OFF"

2. Remove the seat.

a. 2 bolts and a suction cup. See Owner's Manual.

3. Disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor. NOTE: Make sure the petcock is in the "OFF" position before executing this step.

a. Open the clamp with pliers.

b. Slide the clamp away from the barbed fitting on the carburetor.

c. Twist and pull the fuel line free of the carburetor barbed fitting.

d. Install a small rubber plug or cap to keep debris out of the carburetor male barbed hose fitting.

4. Remove the TW200 gas tank. See previously referenced tw200forum.com posting.

5. Drain gasoline into DOT approved receptacle.

a. Secure full gas tank approximately 3" above DOT approved fuel receptacle opening.

b. Place carburetor end of fuel line into DOT approved fuel receptacle opening.

c. Turn fuel petcock to "RES" position.

d. Allow contents of gas tank to drain into DOT approved fuel receptacle.

6. Remove cap from gas tank. Set aside.

7. Remove fuel petcock.

a. Remove the 2 bolts holding the petcock to the tank.

b. Place the two bolts, petcock gasket, and the petcock/fuel line assembly into a zip-lock bag.

c. Set bag holding petcock assembly aside near the gas cap.

8. Take gas tank to the media blaster.





BONUS STEP!
