Again, I have read all of the comments on the ticking sounds from the top end of the tdub. Mine is a 90 with 3660 miles. I adjusted the valves and again and again and again, adjusted the cam chain and double checked it. It did not tap when the valves had no clearance when I bought it. I couldn't get a .002 in the gap of either the exhaust or intake. I wonder if the valves are crapped up. Has anyone shot carb cleaner in the engine when running to attempt to clean the valves? It only taps when it warms up and it's almost intermittent???It taps more than not.....You can almost heare a slight stutter when it taps. I've used the stethiscope and can't pinpoint the sound even though I can hear it with bare ears! Maybe I will just ride!!!!

I have a 1990 too. I sometimes get funny sounds from mine as well. As long as your valves and timing chain tension are in check, you've got clean oil in it, and it runs, I wouldn't worry about it.

When I got my 2009 model (brand new) the tapping clattering noise drove me crazy. Then when my girlfriend bought her 2010 model (brand new) it made the same noise. After hearing hers making the same engine noise I just check the oil in the window and drive the piss out of it and let it make all the noise it wants. It is a noisy SOB, and sometimes the noise is there and sometimes it isn't, and being an intermediate noise is what made me think something was wrong. I now have about 3000 miles and still makes tapping/clattering noises. I say adjust the valves to specs and ride on!

Have faith in the good ol' Tdub,

The harder I listen to my '87 TW the more gawd awful noises I hear. When I ask other to take a listen they can't hear anything bad and tell me it sounds fine.

Or you can place the lavender colored one in the left ear and orange colored one in the other ear and you'll have a very smooth running engine!

I had a ticking noise on my yamaha quad that I talked to local motorcycle shop about. He said set the valves on the snug side and if it still does it don't worry about it, normal and I think he said something about rocker arm being the cause but not a cheap/easy fix.

I recently changed the piston and rings because my TW was a high mileage smoker.

Lapped the valves and honed the cylinder, you need a pack of gaskets to do this job

and could do with a hand on reassembly. This worked well as far as oil consumption

and smoke was concerned but i noticed there was obvious play in the cam and I went

with the .......ball bearing camshaft--anybody tried this? ..idea, and followed the advise,

found a local supplier, only $7.20. This bearing change takes less than an hour and

will remove the top end clatter. of course I had just been working on the engine and

had all the tools to hand. ......Now I can only hear the sound of the main bearings.

For adjusted the valves, it is necessary to check…

Because the engine failure arrives quickly… (Sorry for my translation)

What christdel is explaining is that worn valves with have a small dish worn in them - tappet clearance is impossible to adjust as the bowl is not a regular flat surface and as the tappet moves around the clearance varies (I think).

This picture is pretty consistant with what I found on my 97: previous owners apparently NEVER adjusted the valves. No idea how many miles were on it when I got it: odometer had been busted and swapped for some other yamaha kit with only a trip-meter.

I adjusted the valves pretty early on, but the adjuster/valve had worn at a complementing angle to eachother, and I finished the damage with the valve adjustment. Ended up putting a new valve, seal, lapping it by hand, and a new adjuster in it. Has been good and "quiet" since. I replaced the adjuster on the other (intake) valve at the same time, though it wasn't worn nearly as bad.

Be aware, for those of you who don't like engine noise: I put a ricochet skid plate on, which is an awesome upgrade, but reflects ALL of the TW's hideous rattling and clanking noises right back at your ears. Learn to get sensitive to the important ones, I guess.
