I've been to countries where drivers do a good job of politely communicating with seemingly universally understood hand signals or flashing lights. In this instance flashing the headlights would be understood to please move over. Opening and closing the fingers of the hand means your turn signals were left on. A swipe of the hand across the dash at base of window means "You can merge ahead of me". Flashing headlights at oncoming traffic warns of police or debris on roadway ahead. They also use turn signals to indicate an intention to change lanes or make a turn, something seemingly forgotten here in the USA.
About only courtesy signal widely used here is one flash to semi-trucks ahead attempting to merge into your lane indicating they are safely clear of your vehicle.
