after looking through my manual and reading the do it yourself thread on here I have decided to take the plunge and learn to chang emy own oil on my 2007 tw200. it has 6500 miles and has always had regular service. I have been told to use 20-50, 10-40 and now in my owners manual, the previous owner had written that he used 5w-30. What oil are we all using on our bikes and what works best for you?

obligatory pic

also i have noticed a little grime just below the gasket base. is that an early sign of a base leak or is regular road grime?

Mobil 1 4T in 10/40wt. Replace the o-rings and drain plug washer. No sense in having leaks! Also it was hinted the oil you buy at Wal-Mart is not the same as elsewear. In other words it's to a price point.

Any oil formulated for motorcycles with wet clutches will do the trick. Some will do the trick better than others, but any will do. Modern diesel and auto oil formulas do not meet the needs of the TWs, and will ruin the clutch and allow the cam and followers to wear prematurely.

5Wxx, 10Wxx, and 20Wxx are all appropriate, depending on your ambient temps at cold start. x(x)W30, x(x)W40, and x(x)W50 are all appropriate, depending on the ambient temps and type of riding you do once the engine is warmed up.

Cold start ambient temperatures:

5Wxx below 015*F

10Wxx 0*F to 60*F

20Wxx above 40*F

Maximum operating ambient temperatures

x(x)W30 under 60*F

x(x)W40 40*F to 90*F

x(x)W50 over 60*F

These are the ranges at which Tdub runs best on dfifferent weights of oil.
