Hi all you crazy T-dub nuts.. My wife and I have matching 06 dubs. We are planning on a trip to tenn. in sept. and taking our bikes on the famous tail of the dragon...

Has anyone here went on the loop??? We plan on camping-waterfall day trips-and riding our dubs. We plan on doing this during the middle of the week in hopes of missing the weekend crazies.. Any imfo. would be helpful. Thanks. OMM.

Not sure where you're at, but I don't live terribly far from the area, and the roads are pretty similar here. Extremely fun, especially with street tires. If my boots weren't wider than the pegs I could've probably scraped them. I know the passenger ones got a little grinding when I'd forget to put them up.

In short, the Tdub is very capable. Just watch your speed, as mentioned.

Google Deal's Gap or Tail of the Dragon. You will find lots of info.

There are several motorcycle campgrounds in the area, and many more roads to ride than the Dragon.

Here's Xracer and Mrs. Xracer last summer.

During the summer I live about 2 hours away if you are interested in meeting up.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about. (o;.. Will they let us bring our truck and pop-up in the campground??? We are hauling the dubs in the box of my f-150. When the time grows closer I'll re-post that we are coming and try to get together. OMM.

I don't think you can use your pop up camper right there at deals gap, but there are plenty of other campgrounds in the area. JB probably knows where better than I do, but I know there are plenty around. You might consider the Smoky Mt. Nat. Park.

The one in the picture is right on the NC end of the Dragon, They have motel rooms only,

A popular nearby motorcycle campground is the Iron Horse Campground:

There are a number of campgrounds near Robbinsville, NC and some in Tellico Plains, TN, but they are farther away.

You may be able to reserve a site in the National Park.

If your running the stock Dub gas tank keep in mind the fuel load. It's easy to get carried away with the riding and then find out too late your low on fuel and in the middle of nowhere. In our case I was riding the super tanker KLR with a transfer hose so no problem. If you do not happen to have a KLR around keep the gas in mind.

Thanks. We planned on filling our bikes each morning.. We are good for 100 miles... I see that one section has a sign with about 50 miles between gas stops.. OMM.

One more thing and I'll give Qwerty credit for this one. Make sure your brakes are in good shape! You will need them. I've found the combo of EBC HH pads in the front with oem Yamaha shoes in the rear work well.

I am thinking of tralering down the Tdub behind the Harley next year. I have stayed at Hunts Motorcycle Lodge three years in a row now. The place is real clean and has everything you need. The owner Jack rides a DR200 and his wife was talking about getting a Tdub last year. Its a great ride accross the Cherohala Skyway to the Dragon from the camp. Jack knows lots of dirt roads in the area he can set you up with. Here is a link to Hunts. My link

Not sure which 'loop' you are referring to. There's the Cades Cove loop, the Nantahala loop, the Cherohala loop, and the Newfound Gap loop. I've ridden them all, several times, so if you have any questions I'd be happy to help.

Have a look at this campsite in Google Maps. It's 7 miles up the Foothills Parkway from US 129. The Dragon starts 3 miles from the intersection of US129 and the Foothills Parkway so this campsite is 10 miles from the Dragon. Look Rock is a state run camp site. It's clean, rarely full, and at 3,000 feet it's a little cooler at night. The views of the sky at night are incredible.

The avatar to the left is me on my TW riding Deals Gap. A bigger version of it can be seen here. Riding a TW on the Gap is quite a lot of fun.

There is or was a neat little place to camp at the bottom of Fontana damn. The damn is pretty neat and you can ride across it and it's fairly close to the deals gap store. I would definitely recommend the Cherohala. It's a beautiful road and there is a nice waterfall off it. Hard to go wrong on that area.

If it's not too cold there's some good swimming at Fall Creek Falls just after the first drop. Just follow the trail from the parking lot.
