well the long saga of my 2006 continues... after 2 base gaskets, and a remachining of various things (all on warranty thankfully), I've started to seep a bit of oil at the base gasket again....

I'm past warranty now, so what should I try to get this problem dealt with. I'm running 10w40; might that be too thin? Going to make sure the bolts are torqued of course....

There are many sealants that are good

Most split cases are assembled with threebond 1104 sealant or equivalent It lasts for ever if properly closed

Fortified silicone seal orange will also work but not as well

Is it the pressurized oil, is there an o ring or just the fiber gasket

This is probably a long shot, but after re-torquing the head bolts re-torque the case side covers as well. On one occasion I had what appeared to be a base gasket leak which in fact turned out to be a leak between the case and side cover. I had to clean the area really well, then start the bike and look closely to see it was actually leaking on the seam between case and cover. It turned out to be a misaligned gasket between the case and cover. Also, shortly after getting the bike I went to change the front sprocket and found the bolts on the left side case cover to be loose. So, if you haven't already, look for other possibilities than the base gasket.

+1 on the base gasket year..

As HenryJ put it in a old post " After examination of the stock base gasket on my 2006, I am convinced that the gasket is the problem. I am sure that Yamaha has recognized the problem. Why would they redesign the base gasket otherwise? The 2010 base gasket is vastly different & costs more so it should be superior."

2005, 2006 & 2007 cylinder base gasket
http://www.boats.net...1351-00-00.html $4.02

2008 & 2009 cylinder base gasket http://www.boats.net...1351-01-00.html $4.02

2010 & 2011 cylinder base gasket http://www.boats.net...1351-10-00.html $12.05

I think Yamaha will keep selling the cheapo base gaskets until they run out of them. Only then will they implement the newer style gasket to the older model parts lists.

I already have a 2010 gasket on my parts shelf. I hope having it means my current 09 gasket won't leak.
