Well, with my TCI skidplate successfully installed, I thought I'd take advantage of having the afternoon off work to try it out on the High-Clearance 4x4 FS road that inspired me to buy it in the first place.



This here is what protection looks like!





It was in the high 70s here today, something else to be thankful for.

There were 3 cattle gates that I had to open and close along the way.

The FS road just sort of ends in this wash. Deep sand one way, loose cobbles the other. Time to turn around!





The closest I came to dumping the bike was coming down this hill, so I thought I'd stop for a pic on my way back up. In real life it's steeper than it looks in the picture!

And that's when my camera ran out of memory!



I had no idea that I'd piled up close to 500 pics on that thing. There was some other interesting stuff, gnarly rocks and more hill climbs and the like, but you get the idea.



Looking at the pics I have to say that the terrain looks way more intimidating in person, but also after tackling it today I'm a lot more confident in both the TW's and my own ability to handle this kind of stuff. The TW is ready to keep going, all I have to do is keep on the throttle and point it towards the smaller rocks!



I wouldn't have tried to ride this trail without some beefed up protection, but as it turns out I never clipped the engine guards or plate on any of those rocks, even towards the end when I was definitely pushing it in terms of clearance. That TW has proven itself again to be capable of more than I've given it credit for.

Nice report, Don... you're right about pictures never showing how steep hills appear in real life.

Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your new skid plate.

Looks like that was a pretty gnarly ride it's good that you were able to keep the bike upright. Nice pictures, and nothing looked all that soft. Thanks. Gerry

Looked like a nice day for a ride down yonder. Comfortable temperature's as well. Most of the time I don't mind going up the steep stuff. It's coming back down that always has my utmost attention. I'm hoping to get out for a quick ride in the Oywhee Mtn's. south of where I live this weekend. Maybe! This area is similar to your ride here, with lots of rocks and steep sections of trails and roads.

Nothing like a good skid plate to instill confidence to do wild and crazy things!



I wish I had somewhere like you have to go riding.

I am still very much a beginner. Nice to see what the TW200 can do around Tucson with an experienced rider on it. I tried taking my TW200 across some sand (no fun) and some very eroded dirt roads in NW Tucson. It really helped to build my confidence. I needed that because the flat smooth dirt roads still make me pucker.

Glad you're getting into the groove on that TW Fursniper, but I'm hardly an "experienced" rider! A few months ago I was at about the same spot on the learning curve you're describing right now. It definitely takes a little getting used to the way the bike likes to shimmy around a little in the dirt, you don't get that on pavement for sure.



You oughta hit Redington Rd a few times before the winter rainy season tears it all up. It's pretty smooth (for Redington Rd anyway) right now. That's where I've done most of my confidence-building and I highly recommend it!

looks like fun place to ride and not very soft. That one pic does look steep to me. Its nice the Tw has a low seat so can always put your feet down if you get in trouble. I try not to but gotta put one down once in awhile to avoid a spill. thanks for the pics. I was thinking of riding my tw sunday cuz was in 60's and sunny here in Nor Cal but the local creek is dry (took quad and dogs) and won't be for long once some storms head in.

Great looking skid plate! Sounds like i need to head down your way for a tour guide of the area. Ive always done back way to mt lemon and charlou gap a few times in the rzr.

The backside of Mt. Lemmon is a fun one, the first time I tackled it was in my bone stock 4x4 Suburban. It's definitely more fun on the TW!



Out Redington Rd. is better though. There are numerous FS 4x4 roads, OHV trails, and staging points, and I think you can actually make it all the way to the Willcox playa from Redington without ever touching pavement.



I've done the Willcox playa in the Suburban too, but I'm not sure if it would be a great place to ride or a great place to die on a motorcycle!



I guess there's only one way to find out for sure!
