Do you mean adjust the timing or adjust the tensioning on the chain. The second is very easy to do:



1. Find top dead center (remove 2 covers on the left hand side cover and align the "T" on the flywheel with the mark on the case)

2. Carefully remove the plastic cap covering the adjuster

3. Loosen the locknut at the base of the tensioner

4. Adjust the tension by turning the tensioner (center rod in tensioner should be withing .5mm of being flush with the end of the tensioner)

4. Tighten Locknut and CAREFULLY replace plastic cover.



If you need to actually adjust timing then I'd suggest getting yourself the service manual (a good idea anyway). I believe you can find it as a download (do a search).

hi, i just did my top end and i'm questioning if i have the cam chain tensioner adjusted correctly for my 1998 tw.

can you please clarify what this means?

It is a little confusing, at first, especially if the "center rod" has sunk inside the adjustment nut. That's what happens as the tensioner wears. Just screw on the top of the tensioner bolt until the rod re-appears. It's in there somewhere. Adjust so that it sits just 0.020" below the surface of the adjustment nut.

Is it possible to change the cam chain tensioner from the old style (87-00 years) to the new style cam chain tensioner seen on the 2001 and up TW's?

My 2005 tensioner attaches to the head via 2 bolts. Looks like a pre-2001 screws into the head.

You'd have to change the cylinder too.
