when I changed my oil last week i filled to the middle level on the indicator but now when I check it it is almost to the top of the view window. maybe I wasn't on even ground before but my question is will the extra just burn off or am I in danger of damaging the motor at all?

Excessive overfilling es muey malo. It will pump out your crankcase vent and into your airbox when the piston hits BDC. Best case scenario will be that it sits harmlessly in the bottom of the airbox. Worst case scenario is that it will then get sucked through the intake from the airbox and hydraulic the motor, bending connecting rods or breaking pistons and other stuff you may be rather fond of.

Keep an eye on it periodically. If the oil level continues to rise your float is stuck. (See disaster scenario above).

At any rate any time your oil level is so high that it's beyond the sightglass window you probably want to give it a high priority.

Liquids don't compress well. If there is any doubt drain some out. A bit extra is not bad but if you have the sighting window full, get some out. JMHO. Tom

The worst case scenario would be that there was not enough airspace for the pistons to move down in the normal rotational cycle and liquids don't compress (blow rings, gaskets, and or crack critical things like heads or cylinder walls). This is the extreme and not likely from a few cc's extra. Ideally you might get some blow-by, smoke, loss of power and nothing more. Folks in the old days who didn't want to trust the oil pumps would remove the oil pan from their Yes Studebakers, and make a determination how high the oil would have to be for the rods to dip into the oils and lubricate things sans oil pump. Just right ok, too much, gridlock. I'm sure you are fine but I'd try to avoid the quandry in the future. Tom
