For years I have heard you could buy TW200's as a crated pair or that all TW's come to dealers 2 to a crate but I had never actually seen this in real life. I have inquired with a few dealers to see if I could buy a crated pair still in the crate and they always said no that they had to prep the bikes for sale (and charge for it of course!) Today I was going through the paperwork I got when I bought a pair of 1993 TW's and I found a stack of pictures showing the TW's being delivered and assembled at the original owners friends garage. These were literally delivered (to the retail buyer) in the factory crate about 70% assembled and they had their friend a retired Yamaha mechanic assemble them. Thought you guys might get a kick out of these pics from 1994 in Boulder City Nevada

Neat, like having a brace of dueling pistols.
Remember whitewall tires? And I had a Hi-Lux with those handy bed hooks! Never had the hat though.:p

PlacerLoad,

Awesome find! Thanks so much for sharing this piece of TW history.

Also, something kind of weird: how many other motorcycles are there where you could find a 22 year old picture of brand new bikes being unloaded where the bikes would look pretty much exactly the same if you recreated that picture today with new TWs? The hats, clothes and pickup in the 3rd and 4th pictures would look different but the bikes would look the same. What a time warp.

I ran into a guy from Lake Havasu City AZ a few years ago and he had two 2005 TW's with like 7 miles on them but they both had all new plastic fenders, cowling etc with no decals and it seemed strange to me. He claimed he used to rent TW's and he bought them in crates of 2 for a super discount and stored them in steel shipping containers until he needed them. He said as the rentals got dinged up he would grab a fender or a mirror etc off some of the crated bikes and after several years the last 6 or 8 crated TW's were missing a lot of the extra parts so he had ordered all new plastic etc for them so he could sell them off when he retired. I never made it out to see his bikes before he sold them all but now his story is making more sense. He said he had a Phoenix area dealer who hated TW's because they were slow sellers but that Yamaha made that dealer buy at least 4 (2 crates) each year and the dealer was happy to wholesale them to the rental guy just so he didn't have to try to sell them and over several years the guy had quite a stash of discounted crated TW's

Great story PL and this is in fact how many of the smaller bikes were delivered to the dealers along with the story of forced stocking by Yamaha. Dealers had to buy some models even if they had no use for them.

What I have always wondered and never found an answer to is, Are the crated bikes consecutive VIN numbered? It would be really cool to have a His and Hers pair one number apart from each other.
