I have posted before my 20+ year riding buddy is having major health problems and needs to put 4 wheels down. We went out yesterday and I could see he is losing more each time. He is pretty messed up on possibly going to 4 wheels.

I have no 4x4 experience but I know several of our members do both. Is vehicle off road exploring anything close to the fun on a TW.

Of course it is! Is a sxs or atv out of the question? I know it depends on location and laws.

My Answer: A street legal 4x4 is a different kind of fun exploring off-road. Sort of like apples and oranges are both good fruit but do not resemble each other. The 4x4 experience is often slower, more sheltered, with big cargo capability which all add to the fun. It can be stressful for those climbing the learning curve. The fear of getting stuck or rolling over
on a 4x4 can be as intimidating as the fear one can have of injury on a motorcycle. There is a big thrill to creep in low range over nasty stuff that would dump a TW.
I imagine your buddy would be more of the low speed trail explorer. If instead he remains more of a thrill seeker there are more sporty options like this 2WD terror of Tweaker’s San Diego.

Actually these long travel conversions deliver a smooth ride for young and old

Toyota pickup, bobbed tail frame section, solid axle swap and hopefully a 22re with low gearing.

My 85 4Runner was more of a billy goat than the TW. Mine was lifted 3" with 33s and 4:11 gears. She would climb over anything I ever needed to exploring the Rocky Mountains.


Is that the most realistic suggestion? I dunno....

I hope RlkR’s buddy can find something to keep him enjoying the outdoors.
Now are these outdoors in British Columbia or Arizona?
The 4x4 experience, and thus the optimal vehicle somewhat depends on the Zip Code.
A no-door chopped long travel sand tired rig perfect for Yuma might seem a bit cold and out of it’s league on a snowey rock strewn tight skid trail in B.C.
While we were not asked for a vehicle recommendation I would envision a solution suitable for me in a comparable situation would be something general purpose I could comfortably climb/crawl into and take to the store as well as to the mountaintop. Full size vehicles can be a handful on tight trails so older generation nearly stock Jeep Cherokees, Wranglers and Toyota pick-ups come to mind.

I winter in Yuma where we can ride SxS UTV's into town and go shopping. Here in Vancouver, Washington and most of Oregon you can not use anything not street legal unless you are in an ORV park which sucks with young kids on hot two strokes

That is why we ride TW's - street legal and they cant stop us riding all the back country
