Has anybody seen production numbers on various years of TW's ? One of the reasons I ask is it seems like they must have sold a gillion 1987 TW's because even though it's the "oldest" year I still see 3 of them for sale for every other year I see offered

Well, they were the "fastest year" of the mighty TW. They had to tone them down from 88 on... :D

Yes, I own a 87...:p

If I had to guess and I do, I would say the 1987 first year model was a very popular new bike on the market and they flooded the market with a hit new motorcycle. They were all the rage when they first appeared and a lot of the magazines touted them very highly and at the very low offering price they flew out of dealerships.

I highly doubt we could ever learn the actual production numbers from year to year unless you had a friend in corporate Yamaha willing to do the research.

On another forum for Boston Whaler boats there has been ongoing discussions and years long searches for a particular model, Montauks, which I own one of the early ones. Similar to the TW the Montauk model is still popular today and like the TW only some minor changes have occurred over the years since 1973.

The 87's are all for sale because their electronics don't work and they can't be ridden. But they have loyal following of folks who prove their real MC prowess by solving unsolvable electronic problems. Go figure. Ride on 87. Tom
