I live in Lihue, HI , on the island of Kauai and am an avid surfer. I just wanted to share my take on the venerable TW.



I have performed some minor modifications to my TW to suit my needs to get my self and my surfboard to the local breaks and to access difficult, out of the way spots. I love this bike and it is perfectly suited for my purposes. I can go 55 mph with a short board surfboard without any difficulty. I don't even feel the presence of the board.



Mods so far ( everything sourced from Procycle in Springfield, OR, except when noted):

Protaper bars

Procycle front motocross style fender

O-ring chain

47 tooth rear sprocket

Tool tube

Waterproof rear lockable storage box by SeaHorse ( Amazon)

It is meeting my needs just fine. So far completely water and dust proof. Seems to be a reasonable and cost effective substitute for a Pelican case. I pack extra board shorts, a towel, surf wax, water, etc. Then I use it to lock my wallet and phone up while I am out surfing. I keep my keys on a loop in my board shorts pocket unless the waves are big, then I will stash them under the bushes so there is no chance I will loose them out in the water.



I have taken the TW out on some of the remote westside beaches here. I let the air pressure down to @ 10 psi in the rear which lets the tread flatten out like a tank tread. Then I can run 30 MPH right along the water's edge. When I get to a nice sandbar break I hop off and paddle out. I carry a hand pump to reverse the process for the ride home.



I have also ridden some gnarly jeep trails around the island especially in Koke State Park ( home of Waimea Canyon). The TW is a real billy goat and can get me way, way back into the interior of Kauai which is real Indiana Jones type terrain.



I chose the TW specifically for its utility in the different types of terrain Kauai has to offer. A true MUV (motorcycle utility vehicle). I bought it used ( 2007 model with 1000 miles for $2500) just before I moved here from Oregon and am very happy that I did. The 80 mpg sure helps with gas at $4.15/gal.

I'm just jealous about the fact your in the place to be as far as waves. We get real good surf but not often enough here.



Nicaragua trip this thanksgiving pic. This was the smallest day. No pics on big wave days cause everyone was paddling.

The mean streets of Honolulu - the urban jungle gets tamed by the TDub. If you get over to the Garden Isle you can take my TW for a spin to see the sights.

Wow, that is a cool shot. I haven't been to Nica yet but it is on the list. I could never get further south than Oaxaca once I got a taste of Puerto and the points further south. Now living in Hawaii I use my time off island to go to cold places to snowboard. I leave in two weeks for Alaska. Wish I could take the TDub and put some studded tires for snow riding. I think dropping the PSI down would give traction similar to what I get in the sand here.



Anyone from Anchorage reading this? I ride your TDub up there, you get to ride mine when you come to Kauai. How 'bout a TDub exchange program for forum members.........?

When the trades winds are blowing side on I get no to minimal wind effect with a small board ( 95 % of the time I carry a 5'11" short board ) . It is more pronounced but still manageable with a longboard or SUP (standup paddle) board .
