I started this thread on the old forum. Many thanks to Goldenhtr for relocating it. Weights should be accurate within .5 oz. Use them for shipping weights, to estimate weight savings/gain when doing a hollow mod, to satisfy your own curiosity, or print them out and line the floor of your parakeet's cage with them. Feel free to add your own info. If someone could (accurately) weigh their front or rear Cyclerack, Happy Trails rack, etc.



They're a bit disorganized as I did many of them while dissassembling my bike for powder coating. I'll organize them into a more easily referenced form later, (EDIT: I still haven't done so after 2 1/2 years. I hate to rush into things) just wanted to save the info for now.



"Bare" indicates a component completely stripped, with NO bolts, axles, bearings etc., in stock condition. Subassembly weights will be described as to their completeness when weighed, i.e. "with hardware" etc.



Weights of non-TW items are either for comparison, or constitute a popular mod.







-Frame, bare: 20 lbs. 13 oz





-Engine, complete w/ carb, stator wiring, kick and electric starts: 75 lbs. 4 oz.



(interesting. a complete KLR650 waterpumper weighs in at only 98 lbs )



-Bolts removed from basic frame structure, includes motor mount bolts, does not include front end or swingarm hardware: 1 lb. 13 oz.



-Rear rack, O.E.M. Yamaha, 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" cargo space : 2 lbs., even

-Cyclerack: 7 lbs. 6 oz. (Approx. Example weighed had some modifications)

-My narrowed and modified ATV rack, 27" x 17" cargo space : 8 lbs. 12 oz.

-



-Rear subframe, fender, tail light ass'y w/license plate: 3 lbs. 1 oz.



-Rear subframe, bare: 1 lb. 7 ounces.



-Rear shock, with bolts: 7 lbs. 8 oz.



-Swingarm, bare: 11 lbs. 5 oz.



-Rear swingarm/tire/wheel/adjusters/axle, w/Trailwing mounted, 60% tread: 48 lbs, 8 oz.!!!



-Rear wheel & tire ass'y, w/axle, spacers, brakes and tire: 35 lbs. 8 oz.



-Swingarm w/adjusters, chain guard, rub rail: 13 lbs even



-Swingarm pivot bolt: 9 oz.



-Rear axle: 1 lb. 6 oz.



-Kickstand, less spring and pivot pin: 15 oz.



-Passenger footpeg assemblies, pair, with bolts: 2 lbs. 13 oz.



-Headlight bracket, bare: 11 oz.



-Helmet lock: 5 oz.



-Rear turn signals, pair, early, square, w/nuts: 1 lb., even



- factory fuel tank w/petcock and cap:5 lbs. 1 oz.



-Clarke 2.7 gal. tank, less petcock: 3 lbs., 10 oz.



-XT350 tank 3.2 gal. w/fuelcap and petcock:7 lbs 5 oz.


-Acerbis plastic Xt600 tank w/adapting hadware: 5 lbs. 7.5 oz.



-Skid plate, Yamaha: 15 oz.



-Ricochet skid plate: 3 lbs. 8 oz. (thanks, Sinophilia)



-Emissions canister w/ hoses: 1 lb. 2 oz.



-Airbox ass'y, less mounting bolts: 3 lbs. 15 oz.


-Seat w/ passenger strap and seat bolts: 4 lbs.



-Complete drum brake front end ass'y w/wheel, tire, brakes, trees, gauges, levers, fairing wheel and tire:58 lbs.



-Front tire and wheel ass'y w/ drum brake and axle: 24 lbs 7 oz.



-Front tire and wheel ass'y w/disc and axle: 22 lbs., 11 oz.



-Front caliper, hose and master cylinder: 4 lbs., 9 oz.


-Lower triple clamp and steering stem ass'y, bare, no nuts, bolts or bearings, 4 lbs. 13 oz. of recycled Buicks!!!!


-Upper triple clamp w/ handlebar clamps, 1 lb. 11 oz. Gotta love loonyum.



Trailwing, rear 15 lbs. 5 oz.



-Maxxis Bighorn 2.0, 26x9R14, 21 lbs, 9.5 oz. Close to

advertised weight. Bummer



-ITP Terracross 26x9R14, 23 lbs.,14 oz.



-Maxxis Bighorn D.O.T.-Legal TRUCK tire: 27 lbs. 7 oz. 12 pounds heavier than the stock pig.



-Standard duty rear tube, 2 lbs. 8 oz.



-Trailwing, front, 8 lbs. 12 oz.



-Shinko SR241 DOT trials tire 4.00 x 18 (4.50 mounted) 12 pounds, even.



-Muffler, less headpipe 6 lbs. 3.5 oz.



-Stock handlebars, 1 lb. 10.5 oz.



-Protaper "KX Hi" bars, same aproximate bend as stock: 2 lbs, 5 oz.

Thanks. Updated the list a bit. Could use some actual (not shipping) weights of some of the popular racks if anyone's set up to do that.

We luv ya Russ.. Thats an interesting project, your shop must have been a mess. I was happy to see that my bike is 2 pounds 13 oz lighter since I removed my passenger peg assemblies. Now what to do about the 64 pounds of stuff I added

Adds up quick, don't it?



I call it "the begets". The little tank begets the big tank. The big tank begets the big rack. The big rack begets the big tire. The big tire begets the longer swingarm. The longer swingarm begets the front end swap.....

Ya, I have been thinking of towing around an engine hoist so I can get the bike back upright when I fall. No longer the iron pumping, sand kicking dude of my youth
. Yet the bike continues to put on weight. Gerry

The lowdown on our wheels, and why they weigh so darned much.



Starting up front, here's one broken down to simplest form. A lot of this stuff is steel vs. alloy. Entirely too heavy for what it is, but the front isn't all that terrible. Looks like I forgot to include the speedo drive and spacers.



I'll fill in the blanks later, just wanted to get the pics in before I lost track of them.







THIS mess is a whole other story. Nearly every blessed ounce if it is made from recycled '56 Buicks. Solid steel. I forgot to include the sprocket bolts and brake shoes in this pic:
