Folks from the 'old' forum may remember my affinity for wide open spaces. A busy, busy summer means I hadn't ridden anything rougher than a county road yet this season. I finally said, "enough" and loaded the TW up for another few hours of Wyoming fun.....

The weather was a little threatening at times, heard a few rumbles of thunder but only felt a drop or 2 of rain...

as always, lots of roads to explore.

Many lead to beaver ponds...

...or to views of the rock formations this area is known for...

I was surprised the fall colors hadn't peaked yet...

A day late and a dollar short on the sign themed photo shoot- this one warns of unexploded ordnance!

I'd (almost) forgotten how much fun the TW is and was having such a blast I really didn't stop for many pictures. Before I knew it, 5 hours had passed and it was time to load up and head back down the interstate to home....

As all westerners know- whenever you pass through one of these barb wire gates something good is waiting on the other side!

Looked like a fun day to ride in a fun area. Seems like a month since my last ride and after looking at your photo's, I got the itch to ride. I had to look back when my last ride was...and it was only a little over 2 weeks ago.
I can tell I'm gonna hate winter.

Anyway, I have to leave for work at 1:30 and it was 11:00...so do I take a nap (I like my naps and don't want to be tired at work), or do I go out for a ride? Well, I came to my senses and said to myself, to heck with a nap...and I went for a ride!
And I wasn't late for work either, but I'll be tired!

Your photo's made me do it!

Thanks for sharing your ride.

Glad you had a chance to get out, explore and likely relax some. Seems I have been pretty content dealing with alot of 'little' issues on the home-front. The odd thing, I have enjoyed it as much if not more than going off exploring. Perhaps it's a time in life when one needs to get his 'house in order'.

Sure did enjoy your adventure. Thanks for taking us along... Gerry

Oh, another thing that intrigued me from your ride report, was the "Attention, historic military target range" sign with "closed in 1961 and Albany County Sheriff", giving me extra information to go on. With the information provided on the sign, and the fact you are in Wyoming, I wanted to see what I could find out on the historic military target range and what it was.

With photo's and clues like this, we could start a thread of: "Guess were I rode", or something like that.

Anyway, with the information provided, I think this area was called Camp Otis and was the target and maneuver area for what was in the past originally Fort D.A. Russell. I think the name was latter changed to Fort F.E. Warren, and now know as F.E. Warren Air Force Base. Originally, this area was used to support water and wood for the fort.

From what I read, and what was posted on the sign, the Camp Otis area, which is West of F.E. Warren AFB/Cheyenne, was given to the Forest Service and is in the National Forest now.

Other information I gleaned from reading, which was interesting, was the fort was renamed to F.E. Warren, I think cause he was either Wyomings first Governor or first U.S. Senator or both and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Civil War. Also interesting was his daughter married Gen. "Black Jack" Pershing. There is much more history to the area, but I'll stop at this.

It's kind of neat to discover some U.S. history from doing just a little research from a sign posted in the TW Forum.

Thanks for posting pictures of your ride, it led me to some interesting learning.
