Honda files patents for brand new, fuel injected two-stroke engine

This article says, "now there's a glimmer of hope." IMO there is definitely more than a glimmer. With the impressive successes of the 300 cc KTM/Husqvarna two stroke engines, and potential for future FI two strokes (some have been built, but I'm talking about production engines from major manufacturers), things could get interesting in the fairly near future.

Also, I know this is off topic, but it's so cool that I have to chuck it in here: apparently Nissan has built a 400 horsepower, 1.5 liter 3 cylinder engine that weighs 88 pounds...? How about an adventure bike with this motor?

Unfortunately, that motor never got put to any real use. It was designed mainly for use in the Deltawing. But the Deltawing never did any good, so Nissan dropped it. Mazda picked up the ball and tried to run with it, but the Mazda Deltawing was plagued with the oddest failures you can think of and they eventually dropped it too. Now the Deltawing project is being run by Elan Motorsports [yes, the Panoz guys] and is enjoying poor to mid field finishes [which I think is good since it means they are actually finishing races].

But back to the topic at hand, that Honda engine is pretty ingenious. I read about this a few months ago and then I read and reread the ultra technically worded patent application until I finally figured out how it worked, and I think it's pretty nifty. With the trigonal link setup they've got going on with the crank, the big end of the connecting rod has less radial movement [and also allows for bigger stroke without increasing piston travel] which lets the fuel injectors be closer and basically shoot the fuel straight up the transfer ports which allows the engine to run more efficiently [?] (the reasoning behind the whole design is a bit unclear to me really- it says this design is for better cooling so that it doesn't have to be more complex, but (A.) this design seems pretty complex itself, and (B.) complex is the Honda way)

I have had several great old 2 strokes. An Ace 100 Hodaka and a 1962 Jawa street bike. (and a 1960 Tecumseh lawnmower) My brother had a DT1. I would buy a new Yamaha air cooled 2 stroke in the twinkling of an eye.
