I'd like to venture out on some longer rides this coming year. I want to avoid main roads with higher speed limits, if possible.

I thought of using the Google Earth/Maps option of getting directions from one place to another to query routes a bicycle would use. I'm sure once in a while it would show a truly restricted bike path, but it looks like most of the route options are FS roads and paved slower state roads.

Does anyone have a better mapping option, or have you used Google Earth with the bicycle routes to plan trips?

I like to use a Benchmark atlas, then I plot it into Basecamp to get a GPS track.

I have used this site to make routes for my motorcycle. While this site can make a route for anything, hiking, car, motorcycle, it seems to be geared more to the bicycle enthusiast.

In addition, I use Garmin's BaseCamp with Topo Maps installed. I use to make routes with Google Earth but just haven't for a long time. Many years ago I tried to make gps routes using Google Maps but I couldn't get it to work (i.e. save a route to my computer to later load into my gps).

Good Luck.

I've used this several times to make routes for my wife and her friends to take their scooters on. We're talking 3 day camping rides.
