Valve adjustment specs.

With a new bike, When I adjust the valves for the first time, I set the covers on the bench and use a stamping tool that stamps

1/8 inch numbers to put the valve clearance data inside the cover.

That way no matter which bike I am working on I have the data right there when I need it.

It can be scratched in too but I prefer the stamped numbers.

Definately a smart move. Especially for those that do a lot of traveling on their bike. Remember though, those caps are cast so don't hit 'em too hard.

I use an electric pencil.

Whenever I think of it or have the time I also put my name or initials inside everything I take apart, to I.D. my stuff in the event of theft recovery.
