Had the valves checked at the shop to rule out a problem, sounded good for about a day and now its right back to tap tap (tho not as bad as before)

apparently i was twice out of spec, on both valves. I have studied the valve clearance threads, tripled checked TDC before adjusting and turning engine over and rechecking. I dont have a tool to hold the adjustment pin whilst tightening the set nut, but shouldnt it get tighter than looser? i thought valves were self tightening in nature :/

im very confused, and the guy at the shop is a little surprised as well. I dont have any loss in power, in fact it ran better when the valves got louder again.

Is my camshaft bearing hooped?

My imagination goes to a clever design involving a camshaft bearing that breaks(probably a 6 dollar part or something) instead of a rocker arm? perhaps resulting in a constant loosening of valves (as opposed to tightening, which can burn valves?)

If this is even halfway close to the truth i would be happy

You're correct. Valves tighten as the seats wear.

Is this occurring at the same rate with both valves, or more with one than the other??

they both run out of spec consecutively, though i can only estimate due to the noise. I havent opened it up since the shop had the covers off, i wanted to poke around a bit on here before sending it back in to the shop. The guys i deal with are helpful, but dont have a lot of experience with tw200's (or at least with ones that actually get dirty)

Ive had the famous "rumbling noise" as long as i can remember, hasnt gone away with use. I read on the forum once before that this noise in conjuction with a loosening of valves could be an unhappy camshaft bearing.. does anyone remember this/ think that this is likely the problem?

I was not soft on the bike during break in, may have put too much stress on new parts?

I just want the bike to be happy

The valve tops are probably worn a little bit, it's very hard to adjust valves accurately when there is a slight dimple in the top of the valve where the tappet strikes. I personally wouldn't worry about it.
are there any negative effects from having loose valves?

im pretty sure harleys are welded heads, so its pretty hard to adjust those
