not sure if there's a formal "welcome to the site" section, so I'll post up here..

Just picked up my first TW the other day. It's a basket case to say the least.. no levers, ignition, lighting, fender, panels, trashed seat... you get the idea. Heck, hoping the thing runs - motor isn't seized at least.

I'm been lurking the board a little for a few days, and doing my homework, but if anyone's got tips/tricks or things I should focus on, or if you have spare parts that might help me out for a fair price - please post up! thanks!

and the beast in it's current state...

My old eyes aren't what they once were, but it looks like the CDI is missing. That's gonna be a little hit to take replacing that if it's gone.

A cheap seat fix and if all else works out well you can get the expensive fix later. Marine quality vinyl / fabric.

Or is you decide to part it out I would like to buy the seat.

the seat pan itself is pretty beat up... I'm guessing there should be some sort of metal strip under there that the bolts would tread into to secure to the subframe... I'm guessing because there isn't one.

Two 10mm bolts hold the seat down. They are under the seat above the rear tire. There is a plastic hook thing that is part of the pan in the front.

Just looking at the picture be careful it doesn't cost more to fix this one than to buy a decent used one.

Looks like the start of a great project! I'd buy one just like it for the right price.

Check the classifieds here for parts. Luckily you can get anything you need for it. I hope you get it up and running soon!

I would check compression and the condition of the oil for clues about the inner state of the engine. Then figure out what you are missing and start replacing. Clean the tank and carb etc.

If you get stuck, there are some folks here that have all the answers. I on the other hand have only questions and bad guesses!

I paid $350 for the bike w/ a clean title, so hopefully it works out in my favor...

Ayers, this IS the CDI (I hope), correct?

$350? I would have bought it in an instant! Nice score! seriously, if you have to put 1200.00 into it to make it run you are even as far as price would go around here.

Your project certainly has potential.. Proceed carefully, try to resist buying the really expense stuff in the beginning. In my opinion, when you start out, you want to see if what you purchased has potential. Don't make it a money pit wright away. Go for the the low cost stuff to see how things improve. Then move up to the big ticket issues. No point in putting new tires on a bike that you can't start (as an example). Good luck. Gerry
