Which direction is the oil strainer supposed to go?

Just finished my first oil change and made a cardinal mistake. After taking the drain plug, compression spring and oil strainer out I did NOT pay attention to the screen direction. After putting it back together and changing the oil (black and full of filings at 137 miles) I realized I may have inserted it incorrectly. Using the diagram on page 3-12 of the service manual, I put the oil strainer how it is in the photo, where the screen is inserted into the compression spring and the assembly inserted. Should the strainer be the opposite, where the ring of the strainer is against the compression spring and the basket of the strainer protrudes into the engine? That seems logical as it would put the strainer inside the engine rather than just inside the spring. If I did it backwards, should I re-do the change or will it be OK until the next change?

Sorry for the newbie question.
Thanks

I got lucky then as that is how I did it. Thanks a lot for taking the time to take the photo. Time to ride.
