Last day of the year, Dec 31st. A morning ride in the mid-30's in melting snow.
First had to feed some of the dependants after a light overnight snow squall.

Numerous virgin single track trails, deer aren't active yet.

Just me & and the dogs.

Many miles of fun stuff but warming sun quickly thaws snow & soils creating some fairly sticky and slippery mud.

Part of a good day to be out.

We all went to bed early & slept well. Not late night Party Animals on New Years eve.

Looks mighty refreshing. I haven't ridden my TW in 6 months. That's what it feels like anyway. I think it's been about 1 month. I've been pretty busy moving snow around Frosty Hollow.

I saw the challenge of Admiral's snow load on his driveway. Lots of work!
I often get just a little snow then a lot of sun.

40 degree heat wave today so more single track riding in hills above El Rancho TW.

Mix of sun, shade and a bit of rain.

weather seemed to change frequently.

Stiff and hurting after cycle rack bar impacted my thigh when bike tipped over getting out of an icy trap. I should know better, freeze/thaw cycles can turn manageable snow pack into hazards.

Wet line on right was just this morning’s melt water atop last night’s ice rink.😎

10-4 Elenor, ice is not nice. Ice like this stopped me on three trails today and melting gumbo mud had me abandon a forth intended route that would have led me down to the Truckee River.
I've learned my lesson years past with that mud having had to walk away from my TW once, spent hours rescuing Adam's KLX another time and two days on a neighbor's KTM530. Big KTM power can get really one big stuck! big time! That took returning in dawn's early light packing in hot water twice to help extricate KTM from frozen mud's grip. Next time I'll begin ride when things nice and frozen and finish before sun transforms firm dark chocolate into a milkshake.

It was a nice cloudy 35ish today, so just before I go to the son in laws to watch the SeaChickens, I decided to warm up the ZombieStomper. Kinda weird to have to go in search of snow on the 9th of Jan at this lat/long, but I found a nice pile! It was soft and I sunk, and lots of fun shooting a rooster tail of snow cone fixins to get out of it!! Saw a couple of Balded Eagles circling the neighborhood looking to see if my Shih Tzus were out and snackworthy, but they were too far away for decent pics. We have several nesting pairs that live around us and they are cool.

Today was the first time I've rode since Dec 26. I wanted to go out last weekend but it was raining pretty good - in fact it's rained almost every day for the last 4 weeks or so.

Finally I had a non-work day that was actually dry. The temperature was +3c (about 38f) so I bundled up pretty good. I managed to ride about 25 km before the cold worked into my gloves and my hands started to sting from the cold. I think I'm going to have to invest in some kind of heated gloves.... It did feel good to get out on the bike though, and I noticed a couple of startled looks from car drivers.

34 and raining. Not the best riding weather but I couldn’t sit around the house all day. 98 total miles with most of that being logging roads or trails in the local OHV area.

Took two pics all day.

Little more break-in riding for the TW. Still under a 100 miles, so each short ride ends with little tweaks. Need to lube the clutch cable and likely the lever because it releases poorly, like its binding. Super cold 64° here in AZ. 🌅

I can also say with certainty that the stock front tire is garbage in sand. The VanVan has K180s that are 2 years older than the Tdubs tires and they track wherever you put them. The Tdub on the same trail blew out 2 banked berms because any more input would have washed out the tire using the same speeds. Both sets of tires are at 14psi. I'm trying to decide if I even want to try this tire more, it's that sketchy in comparison to the Dunlop. I'm not a huge fan of sand and those dirt tracker tires (plus the width) make it a non event. The "deathwing" name is not an alarmist title it seems. It feels like I'd expect my CBR to feel off road...

Interestingly, the K180 grips on a sandy banked turn at pretty good lean angles, whereas the deathwing felt iffy nearly straight up and down.

I've been pushing everyone to email them a demand for a SR241 rear tire too. I've not ridden the fat tire bikes with a 241 front yet, but my CRF250L has them front and rear. I'm actually not sure if it will outperform the K180 in deep sand, but I'll find out at some point. The deathwing is scary in loose stuff for sure. I COULD pop the front off the VanVan and try it on the Tdub, but... that's a lot of swearing rather than riding (guessing they are stubborn tires compared to how easy a 241 spoons on).

We didn’t ride but we are planning our next adventures! We just can’t decide exactly where they are going to be so we got maps to cover all the potential places. The Admiral will download the avenza and Gaia maps once we narrow it down a bit. Looks like I got some studying to do.

Giggle. We’re not allowed in California without a personal escort, that’s why we hang with Fred. He keeps us away from the authorities - .......I’m also not allowed in the Netherlands unless I sneak in, but that’s a whole other story!!
