Long time lurker....

Just picked up 2 bikes, a 1990 with 4k miles and a 1992 with 5k miles. The paint scheme reminds me of my mullet days, so will be redone...thinking of a Desert Storm theme. Both bikes are mechanically sound, and just need a few things here and there. Both came equipped with Jimbos windshields.

Bikes are for our place in the Owens Valley to go exploring up there.Thinking of maybe hosting a TW forum ride up there someday...we have lots of room, as well as RV hookups.

Welcome, hope you have lots of fun riding.

If Desert Storm theme mean a sand color type paint job, last year I had a similar idea.

Here is a mock-up photoshop photo a friend here on the form made for me just to give you a visual.

Here's what it looks like today. A little lighter in color than I wanted (looks white in some pitchers), but I'm happy with it.

How did you paint the tank? I figure a little rough up and rattle can on the plastic, but not sure about the metal tank. Don't need a gloss finish, looking for flat...worried it needs to be gasoline proof.

Good question now that its been almost a year since painting the TW.

Mine is a steel tank. Stripped old paint to bare metal. Rattle can primer, rattle can regular paint, almond color I think. 3-4 thin coats over a couple days, lightly sanding and washing with warm water between coats. Then 2-3 coats of gloss clear coat. Regular stuff from the Wal-Mart. Paint and clear coat have held up well (so far), though I'm extremely careful when putting gas in. I treat it as though gas would eat the clear coat and paint. Any splash I quickly whip off.

For my frame I did all the above except I didn't strip the existing paint off. Lazy! I wanted to hurry up so I could go riding.

Plastics. Roughed up with sand paper and painted with regular rattle can paint, same procedure as I used for the tank and frame, but only 2 coats of paint, 2 coats clear coat. I didn't use plastic paint or any hardners and such.

Lizrdbrth and others put me on to vinyl wrap. I purchased a large roll of sand like color (can't remember the exact color) wrap as a backup for use on my tank and plastics if need be. I'll touch up paint the frame.

I didn't expect the paint job to last or do well with the primarily off-road use riding I do, but it has held up a lot better than I thought. I have to touch up one part of the frame, cause the paint wrinkled on my last coat of paint and I was to um . . . lazy to redue it at the time. Can't tell unless you look close. No one has mentioned seeing it, probably due to my blazing speed!

I did the rattle can paint on my tank as well. Can says 48hrs to dry. At 48 hrs 1 minute I found a wonderful pinhole in my tank which made quick work of the paint on the underside. Fixed leak, repainted. That was 2 months ago. A week ago I overfilled my tank (lesson learned) and gas dripped all down the side. Didn't affect paint at all. I had read somewhere on the forum the paint gains more gas resistance with time...so true.

Maxxis D6006. Excellent tire. No longer available.

I found 2 close to home. They want 92.00 each
Manuf. date of 2008 Thinking of offering 100.00 for both. I need 2, and I love the one on my bike.

Manufactured in 2008? If they were stored in a cool, dry place out of sunlight they would still be good. Tires on a TW are so over-sized load rating certainly won't be a factor. I wouldn't run them for longer than three years or until they began to crack.
